I leave it where it is.
“You smashed through reinforced glass.”
“It was taking too long.”
“That was obvious.”
His eyes drop to the dressing under my ribs. “Did he cut you there?”
“Yes.”
Cade’s hand tightens against my face.
The officer speaks. “Sir.”
Cade keeps his eyes on me. “I heard you.”
“Then take your hand off her.”
I reach up and close my fingers around his wrist. His pulse beats hard beneath the bandage around my palm.
“Go get your ribs looked at.”
“I’m coming to your hospital.”
“You don’t know which hospital.”
“Then tell me.”
There he is.
Cade wants coordinates, not a graceful goodbye.
I almost smile.
“The paramedics decide.”
“Then I’ll ask them.”
“You are impossible.”
“You knew that before tonight.”
I pull his hand away from my face.
He lets me.
His fingers drag across mine before separating.
He steps back because three armed officers are staring at him and because I am asking for distance even without saying it.
He lowers his hand but stays close enough that distance looks personally offensive.
Owen arrives before Cade gets five feet away. There is blood dried along one side of his shirt and a fresh bandage around his forearm.
He sees Cade.
Cade sees him.
