Penalty Killer

I let a mobster fuck me last night.

Could anyone tell? Was it written all over his face? Today his body was pleasantly sore in unfamiliar places, a never-ending reminder of strong hands and rough kisses. The edging. The orgasm when he’d finally—finally—been allowed to come. Bennett hadn’t experienced anything like it. Ever.

And now sex with Nico had imprinted inside Bennett’s brain. How could another man ever compare? Someday, maybe. After Bennett retired, maybe there would be another man who could fuck him as well as Nico Marzano had. He just had to hope.

Inside the plane, there were meals waiting for the guys to fuel up during the ride, but Bennett was too keyed up to eat. He took his usual seat in the front next to Noah. Maybe it was a stupid superstition, but they always sat together on the team planes and buses.

“What’s up, Cap?” Noah said, pulling his headphones and tablet out of his backpack. On their last road trip, he’d been catching up on old episodes of Succession.

“Hey.” Bennett put his own backpack down and took out everything he wanted for the three-hour flight. Mostly he would watch game film to study up for tomorrow night’s game.

Noah leaned over after Bennett sat down. “Everything okay? You look weird.”

“Wow, thanks.”

“Hey, I can’t help but point shit out when I notice it.”

“Because you have no filter. It must drive Becca crazy.”

“Oh, like you don’t drive Lauren crazy?”

Not in the way you’re thinking.

He decided to switch topics. Might as well get the potentially bad news over with. “I might know who was responsible.”

“No shit. Really?”

“Yes.”

“Well, don’t leave me hanging,” Noah said when Bennett stayed silent. “Tell me.”

“Nope. I don’t want you involved, remember?”

“Come on, Benny. I won’t tell anyone or involve myself. But you have to tell me.”

“Hey, boys.” Todd, the Director of Team Services, was now standing at Bennett’s elbow, an iPad in his hands. He traveled with the team on road trips and handled the logistics. “Bennett, I made reservations for all of you at that steakhouse with the private dining room tonight. Does that sound okay?”

“Sure, Todd. What time?”

“Seven-thirty.”

“Cool. Thanks. I’ll let the guys know.” Bennett pulled up the team chat thread and sent the info to the group. Most players were still on their phones and responded with a thumbs up. Bennett switched to airplane mode and settled in for the flight.

“Benny,” Noah said quietly. “I’m serious. Who was it?”

“I don’t want to tell you. What if I’m wrong?”

“Except you never are. Did someone remember seeing who was there? A witness or whatever.”

“No, some grainy photographs taken from a security camera. I think I recognized the guy’s coat.”

“No shit?”

“No shit. I’m gonna talk to him tonight.”

“Can’t wait to hear how that goes,” Noah said dryly. “I still can’t believe a guy on our team would do that.”

You probably don’t think you have gay teammates, either, Bennett wanted to say.
