I fake a calm smile. “Thank you, Hernan.” I gesture to the chair at my desk. “Please, take a seat, Commissioner.”

“Thank you.”

He sits down and Hernan closes the door on his way out.

“So….” He sits back and crosses his legs, all arrogant and prick like. “Anna Russo.”

“How can I help you, Officer?”

His eyes hold mine. “What is your relationship with Valentino Leone?”

“That is none of your concern.”

“I disagree.” His eyebrows flick up. “That is all of my concern. My only concern.”

“Well,” I sigh as I turn to my computer, “you really should get a more viable concern, Commissioner.”

“Are you in a relationship with Valentino Leone?”

Our eyes are locked. “I don’t see the relevance of this question.”

“I’m going to bring him down.”

“Are you saying that you have a vendetta against Valentino, Commissioner?” I frown. “That sounds suspiciously like a setup situation to me.”

“Let me make something clear to you, Miss Russo.” He sits forward in his chair and presses his pointer finger into my desk. “I own Rome, and I will not take someone like him being in my jurisdiction. In any shape or form.”

I press my lips together to stop me yelling the words screw you, asshole.

“I am going to ask you again.” He sneers. “Why…is he here?”

“I don’t know.”

“You told me last night that you were just visiting.”

“Then I find out this morning that you live and work here. That brings you in contempt of the law, Miss Russo.”

“How did you find that out exactly?”

“I looked up your records.”

“I believe that’s illegal,” I fire back.

“Selling cocaine is illegal.”

“I don’t know what you’re doing here or what you’re trying to achieve by bullying me.” I stand and walk to the door. “But I’m very busy. You need to leave.”

He stands and walks toward me. “I’m going to put your boyfriend in prison for the rest of his life.” He smiles. “I could organize for him to be in the cell next to your other lover, Carlo.”

The sky turns red…. I hate this man.

“You could do your conjugal visits with the two of them at once, save yourself some time.”
