“We’ll do what we need to.” Luke sits next to Harper’s feet. “Anything for her.”

Even though none of us repeat it out loud, it’s in our hearts. She’s in our hearts.

“Do it for you too.” Jennifer sighs and looks around at us. “Caden, if you have room for me, we can take her to your house for tonight. She needs to finish her IV meds before we can go, and I’ll need to check on her every hour. But I know she’ll want you close.”

“When will she wake up?” Nico asks. His eyes are tired. Tonight had to be a strain on his body so soon after surgery.

“Maybe in an hour. Maybe in the morning. We’ve done our best to counteract the drugs, but her body and mind have been through a lot tonight. She needs rest to heal.”

“How are the others?” I ask. Will’s not dead, but he went through hell. I don’t know what the others went through during their captivity.

“Dealing.” Jennifer smiles softly. “The FBI has an agent here, and they’ve been around to talk to everyone else. Kenz and Brandon are on their way home. Will is still receiving breathing treatments and will probably stay overnight. Angela left an hour ago after talking to the agent and Cam.”

Cam? Eli’s dad? When I look over at him, Eli nods.

“Penny is being examined and then she’ll be questioned as well.” Jennifer clasps her hands together in her lap. “You’re all going to be questioned. The FBI have taken the case over from the local police. The DEA is involved because of the drugs used, and they found more in the house.”

“If they need another house to check, we know they have a hangout.” Eli rubs his chin.

“Just don’t end up giving them too much information.” She stands and looks at Harper. “Don’t talk to anyone without Cam present. He’ll make sure you don’t get bunched in with those guys.”

I’m not surprised to hear Eli’s dad is helping. Though we know he’s still connected to William Foster. Someone knocks at the door. Jennifer turns and opens it.

Cameron stands in the doorway, and he smiles when he sees it’s her. He glances at all of us and his eyes settle on me. He steps in and rests his hand on my shoulder.

“How are you, Jack?”

“Better now.”

He nods and turns to look at Harper. “How is she?”

“Alive,” Jennifer says, taking in a breath.

Cameron nods with a grim look. “Jack, I’ll talk to you when she wakes. Jenn, will you come with me to talk to Penny? I need a nurse in the room, and you make everyone feel comfortable.”

Jennifer brushes her hands down her scrubs. “I can do that. Harper’s in good hands.”

“I called my dad,” Luke says, watching Jennifer.

She stiffens, but nods. The rest of us wait for Luke’s next words.

“He can make sure this goes away for her.”

Jennifer takes a deep breath and turns to look at Luke. “Maybe. You always have a place in my house, Luke.”

He nods and lifts his fingers from Harper’s jaw. “I should go with you.”

Jennifer smiles softly. “Stay with her. I’ve got this. If Penny needs you, I’ll have someone come get you.”

CHAPTER 30

The Passed Pawn

Penny

I stand in the bathroom, scrubbing the remaining blood off my hands. All I have left is to wait for the FBI agent to come in and talk to me, then I get to go see Will. My insides grow warm thinking about him.

I’m not sure I should say anything to the agent without talking to Luke. Or maybe my father? I bite my lip and look at the mirror.
