“That’s nice.”
She smiled at him. “Yeah. No car or house payment since both are paid off.”
She unlocked the door and slid in, and then he moved between her and the door, with one hand on the roof and the other on top of the door.
“Thank you for being here. I really hope we don’t have this happen a lot.”
“Not human smuggling. That was my first. We get a lot of immigrants that can’t speak our language yet, and they need an officer for one reason or another. They call me.”
“How many languages do you know?”
“Seven, but only four I speak fluently.”
“Damn. I can barely speak English.”
She chuckled. “Call if you need anything.”
“I will. You do the same. Be safe.”
He watched her pull out before he turned and went back to the group. He could have been imagining it, but he thought several of them looked disappointed. He wanted them to believe she was already his, and he thought he had pulled it off.
He spent the next few hours with the different agents. At about 9:00, he was finally able to get out of the office. He’d been at the office since 5:00 that morning, so he was wiped out.
He grabbed some food at the drive-through and headed to his condo he was renting until he found a house to buy. He hadn’t had any time even to look yet, so he thought it was going to take him longer than he’d planned.
After he ate and showered, he dropped into bed. The last thought in his head was of her.
Chapter Five
The next few weeks flew by. She’d been so busy she hadn’t had a day to herself, and she needed it. She was exhausted and had spent hardly any time with Marla, but she managed a few phone calls.
She was pulling out of one of the schools that needed her help that day when her phone beeped, indicating a text.
If you’re not busy, come to the station.
Captain RM
A smile grew on her face. They had played phone tag for over a week, and she could tell just from the texts alone how impatient he was getting.
Ten minutes later, she walked into the building and headed up to the second floor. She waved and smiled at the people she knew but didn’t stop to chat.
She knocked on the door.
“Enter.”
“Hey,” she said and closed the door. “You wanted to see me?”
He threw down his pen, stood, and walked to the front of his desk and sat on the edge before he crossed his massive arms over his chest. “Hey, yourself. I don’t like the game we’ve been playing.” The tone of his voice was more a growl than words.
She bit back a smile. Yeah, he was impatient. “It was no one’s fault. We’re just busy people.”
“I’m glad you could make it. We’re going to dinner on Friday.”
She sputtered out a laugh. “Was that a question or a demand?”
One of his eyebrows lifted. “Does it matter?”
She felt a shiver of what she would guess was desire, but it was unlike anything she’d felt before, racing down her spine. It was more powerful and intense than anything she had ever experienced. She crossed her arms over her chest to hide the fact that her nipples were hard, and it was evident with the silk shirt she wore.
