Annalise:

Are you wearing leather pants?

Three bubbles immediately appear.

Mackenzie:

We’re doing a photo shoot. Zee thinks the band needs merch. These things are so tight I can’t even sit down, but I’m counting that as a good thing, otherwise, I worry he’d make me wear them to our show tonight.

I had very much noticed the pants appeared tight, but that was not their defining feature. What made my breath catch and my heart complete a loop-de-loop was how low they sat on his hips, revealing the tops of his V-lines just above the waistband.

Annalise:

Where does one purchase this merch?

Annalise:

Are everyone else’s pants equally as tight?

Annalise:

Too bad you left your leather jacket here. You could have had a whole three-piece suit.

He doesn’t text back but instead sends another photo. Mackenzie is in the foreground, eyebrow arched in an expression that is clearly not impressed. Zee and the rest of the band are behind him seemingly unaware the photo is being taken and wearing identical pairs of leather pants.

Annalise:

Good luck. Send me the link for merch. I need a new hoodie.

The following day I get a pic of a donation clothing bin and a text.

Mackenzie:

Took me 45 minutes to get them off last night. Maybe they will make some other Michiganian very happy. Getting on the bus now. Will text you later.

I send him back a “safe drive” but don’t hear back from him until just after one a.m. as I’m climbing into bed. I reach for my charger and am just about to plug it in when my phone pings twice in my hand.

Mackenzie:

hey

Mackenzie:

are you still up?

I flip on the light, a giddy lightness flooding my body.

Annalise:

You caught me just in time. How was the bus?

I roll on my side seeing the three dots appear on my screen.

Mackenzie:

Easy trip. Inspiration struck on the 75 South. I wrote something. Can I send it to you?

I don’t know what exactly that means but I type back.
