I’m Running Out of Excuses

“Cami!” I call when I enter the lodge and kick off my boots. “You have some explaining to do!”

She doesn’t even look up from the cookies she’s icing with a piping bag. “Hmm?”

“Care to explain why you put me in a cabin with a famous bull rider?” I ask, hands on my hips.

She smirks while icing the cookies and still doesn’t meet my eyes.

“I have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about,” she says calmly, still clearly enjoying this.

I narrow my eyes. “You set us up.”

She finally looks up, blinking with exaggerated innocence. “What are you talking about?”

I cross my arms. “The cowboy that I found sleeping on my couch this morning.”

“Oh.” She shrugs and grins. “That’s Ty. The one who texted his driver’s license when you went out gallivanting in Vegas with him. Then the Ty who showed up with Tucker.”

“And then you thought it was a good idea to meddle and put us in a cabin with ONE BED FOR MY STAY,” I huff.

“You should be thanking me.” She smirks and adds more icing to a cookie.

“You knew I went out with Tucker’s friend? You know Tucker is pissed right now, right?”

“I knew the lodge was full,” she says, straightening and setting down the piping bag. “And Tucker will be fine. I’ll talk to him.”

“You also knew the bunkhouse is available. We both know it is because half the guys are gone for the holidays.”

She presses a hand dramatically against her chest. “Jenna Jessop, are you saying you want to stay in the bunkhouse?”

“No,” I clip. “It stinks out there like a sweaty cowboy.”

“I’m deeply offended,” she says, pretending to be miffed.

“You should be.” I grin, shaking my head. “With your own behavior.”

“I’d never meddle,” she says with a smile.

“You absolutely would.”

“I absolutely would. And did,” she admits. “But for good cause. Have you seen that guy? Jenna, he is SMOKING HOT.”

Oh, I have seen him. All of him. And not one thing about him disappoints.

“Exactly what you need!” She walks around the kitchen island and bumps my shoulder. “I couldn’t help it. I’m happily married to Jack. But I have eyes.”

“I have seen him,” I say with a snort. “But we just met. And we didn’t even know each other’s real names.”

“Jenna, he is perfect for you. Plus, who am I to get in the way of fate? No way. My job is to lend fate a hand.”

“I live in L.A. He lives...I don’t even know where he lives, but we couldn’t be anymore different. That is why we had fake identities.”

“According to his driver’s license, it’s a place in Wyoming. But now you have all the time in the world to snuggle up in your little warm and cozy cabin and figure it all out.”

I shake my head, but the smile on my face gives me away. I think about the note I left him on a napkin that he saved in his wallet. Surely our night meant something if he kept that note.

She notices my smile, and her grin slowly fades into something softer. “You really like him.”
