Not words. Not cries. Just raw animal grief. Just a roar against life, the universe, the unfairness of it all, the sound ripping out of us until our throats burned, until our lungs emptied, until there was nothing left.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

YVAINE

Today was a day I never expected in the 3,000-year history of werewolves.

Me, the Highlander’s twin, sitting in the Dark Diamond arena and cheering for my mate, Comet’s greatest rival. Whenever I’d heard his name over the past few years, an avalanche of insults had always followed.

And now? I was his number one fan.

Dark Diamond sat just two points behind Comet in the league, but if they won today against the Golden Furs, they’d reclaim first place. No doubt Logan and his team would smash them, though the Golden Furs…they were utterly terrifying. Rumor had it their new captain was a brutal giant who’d stolen the quarterback position from his predecessor in junior year. It reminded me a little too much of Logan.

Amaia, who attended not only every match but nearly every one of Callum’s training sessions, had insisted we arrive early to avoid the crowds and the violent fans. Armed with our special passes, reading glasses, and textbooks, we stepped into the almost empty stadium. “Look at us,” Amaia commented with a slight blush. “In the front row, like two fanatics.”

“Yeah.” I shaded my eyes against the blinding stadium lights. “What’s better than two wereball players as mates to spice up our lives?”

“Callum is more like sugar. He sweetens my life.”

“Logan is like paprika.” I grinned. “Makes everything hotter, turns your face red, and definitely isn’t for everyone.”

She laughed. “I want to change mine! Callum’s my ginger honey tea.”

The stadium slowly filled around us. The DD Ultras, like a military legion of fans, unfurled a giant banner with T-E-R-M-I-N-A-T-O-R painted in enormous red letters. Hopefully it wasn’t blood.

I was about to start reading chapter ten when a specific blond head appeared on the field.

“Paprika’s here!” Zelda yipped.

In a jersey, tiny shorts, and no shoes, Logan still hadn’t spotted me, too busy shouting at his teammates as they warmed up.

Why is he the only one wearing a shirt?

A few feet away, Killian sat with legs stretched into a V while a girl painted a black skeleton across his tattooed chest. Every now and then, he leaned over to whisper something that made her blush so hard it was probably visible from the International Space Station.

Just then, Logan’s head snapped toward me.

I waved.

I expected him to wave back and return to warming up. But then again, when had my mate ever done something expected? He never acted like the typical guy, because he wasn’t typical.

He sprinted, and the more distance he closed, the more he reminded me of a lion. I definitely have drool in the corner of my mouth. Then he vaulted the railing, caught me by my hips, and lifted me into his arms.

“You’re here.”

“I’m here.”

He spun me once and kissed me like we’d been apart for months instead of a week. He crushed me to his chest, holding me there, my feet dangling above the ground, my cheeks burning against his warm pecs.

“Hi,” he whispered, eyes roaming my face.

I decided I wasn’t finished yet, so I stole another kiss. He groaned softly, pressing me into all his hardness.

“Hi,” I breathed out, stroking his cheekbones before my fingers found a deep scratch. “What happened here?”

He turned his head to kiss my palm. Amusement flashed in his eyes as he took in my worried state. “The new captain got mouthy with one of my teammates.” A shrug. “I fixed the problem.” Considering that smug look, he was pleased with the result.

“Logan…the game hasn’t even started. Why isn’t it healing?”
