KILLIAN
I’d seen Lucien a grand total of five times in my life. Never a show I’d get used to. I told myself he cared about me somehow. He had to. He was Logan, wasn’t he?
Except…he wasn’t.
He was that part Logan had tried to sever before it rotted all of him.
But how do you amputate your own shadow?
The first time I saw Lucien pop out was when he slayed his own brother, Daniel. He also nearly took my leg off. Not on purpose, and I had forgiven him. The missing tips of my two fingers on my left hand had become quite the conversation starter with the ladies anyway.
The other recent time Lucien had visited us was when Yvaine slept with someone else, and half the pack had been demolished.
The lycan had crossed an entire ocean to find her.
And now? Now that his mate’s blood had been spilled?
The moment Logan’s skin split, I knew we all had to run. And fast.
Before bolting from the bathrooms I saw a black clawed hand slash the steel door, five perfect gouges shrieking through the metal.
For one suspended heartbeat, nothing happened.
And then an unearthly howl shattered the air.
We backed away from the epicenter just as a loud crash sounded.
Then silence again.
I stepped forward.
“Wait, Killian!”
“It’s dangerous!”
I ignored them and opened the door.
And there it was. Not the lycan, but a lycan-sized hole punched straight through the outer wall, bricks littering the floor, dust billowing. Lucien hadn’t bothered with the door. Why would he?
“Killian.” Alpha Jonathan’s voice stopped me. “The game continues.”
“What? Who cares?” I pointed toward the crater. “I have to go help them—”
“A rescue team is already following my son and Callum. It’s too dangerous, pup.” His eyes never left the hole, his tone grim.
I growled at him.
“I want you to take a deep breath and follow my order. Now.”
Exhaling, I nodded stiffly, my fists clenching. “Yes, Alpha.”
Even if we finished the game, none of us had won today.
Pulling my hair hard, I glanced at Lucien’s art on the wall. “Good hunting, my brothers.”
YVAINE
I dragged in a deep breath; damp earth and mold filled my lungs. Moon Goddess, my skull was throbbing, my legs were refusing to follow my orders, and a metallic taste coated my tongue. Something hard and cold pressed against my back—concrete.
