LOGAN
Lucien tried to sniff beneath Ruby’s tail…twice. She growled and batted his muzzle away.
His eyes widened, ears flattening instantly, a wounded whine ripping from his throat.
“Lucien, what the fuck are you doing?” I barked through our mind-link. Goddess, what if Yvaine thought that had been my idea?
He ignored me, one paw waving dismissively at me inside our shared mind, sulking like a loser.
“Mate sorry.” He slowly kneeled before her and took both her clawed hands in his. “You. My life.”
“Lucien.” Ruby gazed down through her long lashes, and he lit up like ten Christmas trees. “Why did you sniff me down there?”
He looked away. “Lucien don’t know.”
“Tell me something nice.”
I raised an eyebrow at the sudden fear embracing my body. It came from dear Lucy.
“Help me!” he called to me, sweating.
“Didn’t you just dismiss me?”
“Please.”
I huffed. “Tell her she’s the most beautiful female you’ve ever looked at in your life.”
“Won’t Mate ask how many other females Lucien looked at?”
“Of course not!” I scoffed. “I know how to melt a lady’s heart.” Human or not.
Lucien repeated my words. To my shock, Ruby pouted, and I was the one that melted. Goddess, she really is beautiful. I could just stay here and admire her for hours, always noticing new details. My new favorite art piece.
“How many females have you looked at?”
Lucien recoiled.
Ruby stepped closer. “You enjoyed looking at them?”
His enormous hands flew to his furry chest. “Human told Lucien to say!”
It was a funny sight—a domineering creature, much bigger than the other, now shaking and stuttering.
Wait, did he just blame me?
“Oh.” Ruby frowned. “Yvaine says that compliment is low quality.”
“Shit,” I cursed.
“Human said shit,” Lucien reported diligently.
I nearly choked. “No, no! Lucien! Don’t repeat that!”
“Now Human said no, no, Lucien, don’t repeat that!”
I dragged both hands down my face. If I could’ve left my own head and moved to another skull, I would’ve.
“Yvaine says our humans need to talk,” Ruby announced.
