My stomach dropped. Don’t Call Her.
She sighed softly, like he was being unreasonable. “I tried calling again, but your phone was…well…”
“Have you thought about the fact that I don’t want to talk to you? Wasn’t blocking your numbers enough of a clue? How many new SIM cards are you willing to buy with Dad’s money?”
“Please, can we talk?” she asked, tone pleading.
Logan let out a humorless laugh. “How mentally disturbed can you be?”
“Just a few minutes!” She still hadn’t moved an inch.
I rubbed my arm; something about her unsettled me.
“Stay. Away. From. Us.” Logan’s voice sharpened as he stepped in front of me. “Don’t even look at my mate.”
“He will come for you, Logan. For her.” Her voice was clinical, quiet, cold-blooded—everything that Logan wasn’t. “You killed his son and he hasn’t forgotten. A lycan debt is a life sentence.”
Logan’s hand clamped around mine and pulled me away.
I glanced back once.
There was nothing between the pine trees anymore; Francisca had vanished, the forest swallowing her whole.
My skin prickled.
Logan cut through the woods without direction.
“Our mate is suffering,” Ruby whimpered.
“We can explore this area, sure.” I didn’t know what else to say, my heart aching with his. “The woods are…mystical at dusk!”
Nothing. Only the harsh rhythm of his breathing.
I almost had to jog to keep up, hopping over sprawling brambles, while Logan simply walked straight through them, letting the briars rake bloody lines across his skin. A particularly nasty thorn lodged itself into his knee. He didn’t even flinch.
The sparks where our hands were touching flickered weakly. Nothing was reaching him. Were we even inside Dark Diamond territory anymore?
“Logan?”
Silence.
“Rudolph?”
He continued on.
“Please, can we stop?”
I swallowed, using the only resource left.
“Lucien.”
He stopped so suddenly I almost collided with his back. A low growl rolled through him, his shoulders trembling.
I calmly circled him and gazed up…only to gasp. His lips had peeled back over elongated canines that had cut into his own flesh, blood trickling from both corners of his mouth. Black veins fanned out like spiderwebs beneath his skin, and his irises glowed red. The embodiment of a creature that haunted lonely forests and gave birth to legends.
I’d called and Lucien had come.
“Lucien, look at me.”
