“Oh…” Disappointment rippled through the mate bond. “Fine. I’m sorry.”

I sighed and rolled us over until I was staring at the ceiling.

“I can feel what you’re feeling now.” I swallowed. “And you’re disappointed.”

“I am disappointed, Logan.”

Ouch. She could’ve thrown a vase at my head and it would’ve hurt less.

“But not in you.” She sat up, crossing her legs beneath the sheets.

“Then?” I pushed myself up against the headboard.

“I’m disappointed that someone let you down to the point that you don’t even want to talk about it with me. Your mate. The person you’re supposed to be able to tell anything to.”

Rubbing my face, I exhaled.

“You’re right. And you are that person. I’ll tell you…” Her expression softened. “But it isn’t a pretty story, Bunny. It’s boring…and sad. I’ve been sad for long enough already and I sure don’t want you sad because of it, too. Are you sure you want to know?”

When she nodded, eager, I smiled and leaned in to kiss her…but her palm flew over my mouth. I raised an eyebrow.

“Oh, come on! Stop using sex to distract me!” She stared at me with disapproval, her arms crossing over her chest. “You can tuck that beastly appendage back into your pants!”

I blinked. “Um, what?”

“Because there will be no more sex until we finish this conversation, Logan.”

I stared at her, mouth hanging open…then burst out laughing. “You are so cute! Oh, Goddess. I already knew you were, but I didn’t think you could be even cuter.”

She opened her mouth to argue, but I kissed her, her tiny moan slipping between us.

Yvaine slapped my hand when I squeezed her butt. “Logan! Stop.”

I had no intention of stopping. Life was too short and I needed most of it to love and tease this woman as much as I could.

“I don’t think I like your compliments.” She snorted, brushing her hair from her face. “First, you tell me I’m too tall so you need a ladder. Then you call my dick a beastly appendage.” Shaking my head, I hid my smirk. “You know what?”

“What?” She pursed her lips.

“The appendage is offended.”

Her eyes widened.

“And it won’t be giving you any more attention until you apologize.”

“Logan!” She was bright red now.

I laughed softly, then brushed my knuckles over her cheek. “Hey. I’m kidding.” Mostly—the mental image of her apologizing directly to my appendage was going to be a problem. I took a deep breath. “Let’s talk and get it over with.”

Then I can kiss all of you afterward.

She let out a long, relieved exhale and nodded. I started with Francisca and her background.

“Bella and I used to come home from school to our parents yelling. Or, more accurately, Francisca was. Every day was a different reason. The house felt too small. The pack hated her. Dad was never around enough for her liking, too busy being a father and an Alpha.”

I shook my head, sickened by the woman that created me. “When I wasn’t at our Gamma’s with Killian and Callum, Dad took Bella and me to Grandma’s or to the playwood, our werewolf playground. He drove us to school and picked us up. Made sure we ate proper food, told us to brush our teeth. We at least had one great parent, because Francisca never cared. All her attention always belonged to Daniel…or to whatever man she was fucking that week.”

I glanced down to see Yvaine’s hand had slipped over mine. She didn’t say anything, just held it and waited.
