I wanted to look after this colossal beast. Fate decided he was mine.

So when he dropped to his knees, anguish and pain distorting his features, I rushed to him.

“Lucien.” I cupped his muzzle. He panted, head jerking. His eyes wildly switched from red to silver then back again. “Look at me. I’ll help you and Logan.” I stroked his cheek. “You’re my mate. I’ll never abandon you.”

With a shaky whine, he buried his face in my neck. “You…” I felt moisture on his lashes. “You love Lucien?”

“So much.”

Tears slipped down through his black fur, falling into a world that had been unfair to him. I watched them hit the earth and disappear forever.

“Don’t want to be locked away anymore.” The voice wasn’t quite Lucien’s anymore, nor Logan’s. It belonged to both.

His body shook, ripples all over, a battle between two entities, forced to share.

“You won’t be. But you need to let Logan come back.”

A long, shuddering breath released from his parted mouth, then he pushed me away, just enough to break the sparks between us. “Goodbye, Mate,” he mumbled, head down. And just like that, his size started to shrink, his enormous frame folding inward.

Black fur peeled away in clumps, falling around him and leaving tan skin behind. Rounded ears poked through, though dark tufts clung to their tips. His nails were still pointy, and dirty blond hair streaked with black spilled over his inked shoulders. Those fracture tattoos, like bolts of lightning, looked larger now, redder, and more numerous, like the shift itself had reopened them.

Logan lay face down, as naked as the Moon Goddess had made him.

I hurried back to him, kneeling at his side.

His whole body was shivering. I did my best to ignore the muscular sight below his waist. My eyes caught on the K + L heart pierced by an arrow tattooed on his calf.

A blush tinged my cheeks. I forgot how sculpted he was. Michelangelo’s David was an ugly duckling in comparison.

Carefully, I brushed the tangled blond hair from his face. Sparks.

Longing crashed through me. It’d been a month since I’d last seen him.

“Bunny Doc?” Logan rasped.

My vision blurred with tears. “I’m here. Everything’s fine.”

CHAPTER NINE

YVAINE

My eyes roamed over him, medically assessing the lingering lycan traits.

“Oh, Stephen!” My hand flew to my mouth. I noticed one peculiar detail. A moving detail.

My wide eyes bounced back and forth, following the swishing black tail, growing from right above that harder-than-diamonds butt. Lucien’s tail.

“Yvaine,” Logan croaked, pushing himself up on his hands and knees. “Where are you?” His hand patted around before he pitched forward and fell on his chin. “Ouch!” Blood splattered from his mouth.

“Here. I’m here.”

His head snapped toward my voice. His eyes. They were milky white, cloudy and unfocused.

I bit back a whimper as I sank to my knees beneath the weight of this discovery.

My mate is blind. Every lecture, every ophthalmology case, every prognosis I’d ever studied tumbled through my mind at once. Blindness that severe wasn’t reversible, supernatural species included.

“Logan…” My voice cracked.
