“Really, just give me a second, okay?” I whispered, like I was trying not to spook a baby deer. She nodded and slipped out the door, all sweetness and grace.
My nostrils flared and I stared at the door without batting an eye. Every part of me wanted to chase after her. My fists clenched. Calm the fuck down.
I threw off the blankets and bolted to the bathroom. Grabbing a few towels, I wiped the floor like a madman, chucked my used boxers into a plastic bag, and fished out a clean pair.
I walked back into the room and pulled on sweatpants and a checkered T-shirt I borrowed from Yvaine’s uncle. I opened the window a little and grabbed a decorative pillow from the couch, also checkered, strategically placed it over my lower half, and yanked the blankets back over me. I couldn’t even think about what she’d do if she realized my condition.
“Bunny Doc? You can come in,” I said, my voice hoarse.
She practically sprinted in, then halted like she’d hit an invisible wall, took a couple more steps toward the bed, and stopped again. “Are you sure it’s okay if I stay?” she mumbled, avoiding my eyes. “I can just go back to my room.” She tugged at the hem of her tank top, trying to pull it lower while I straight up stared like a complete creep.
“Of course it’s okay. I like your pajamas. You look cute.” To hell with that, she looked edible.
“Thanks.” She rubbed her arms like she was trying to shake off the intensity of my gaze. We both remained there in awkward silence for a few more heartbeats.
“What are you waiting for?” I spread my arms wide and gave her a grin. “Come here.”
She took a breath, gave me a smile, and crawled into bed.
The second she snuggled into my arms, all my stress and that scratchy feeling evaporated. Magic. She is my spark of magic in the world. I hugged her close to my chest, feeling like I’d been missing her for a lifetime even though she’d only been gone for, what, a few minutes?
“L-Logan,” she squeaked, coughing a bit. I glanced down and chuckled. I could only see the top of her head as I squished her with my overenthusiastic hug.
“What?” I tried to sound innocent.
“I…can’t breathe!” Her voice was muffled.
I quickly loosened my grip, though I wasn’t about to let her go completely. “So…couldn’t sleep, Bunny Doc?” I asked after a beat.
“No, I couldn’t.” She exhaled, resting her head in the crook of my neck. Instinctively, I tilted my head to rest it on hers, my eyes closing as a stupid smile spread across my face. “What about you?” she asked in that inquiring voice I loved.
“Sort of.” I kept it vague as I felt her eyes on me.
“You seemed quite awake to me,” she grumbled.
I sniffed her hair, then pressed a soft kiss to her head. “Better now?” I mumbled, fully enjoying having her curled up next to me. I was realizing you couldn’t sleep without your mate after meeting them. The Moon Goddess was clingy.
“Yes.” She yawned. I could almost feel the tiredness washing over her.
“Yes,” I echoed, and it wasn’t long before I passed out, too, having the best damn sleep of my life.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
YVAINE
For a werewolf, I was in terrible shape. The more time I spent with Logan, the more obvious it became.
Comparing my kissing stamina to a wereball captain’s didn’t help. But still. I had to peel my lips away from his, desperate for oxygen.
“Wait.” I laughed softly. “I need to breathe.”
Ever since I’d gathered the courage to knock on his door two nights ago, every restraint had fallen. At least for Logan. The second we were alone, he would pull me into his arms and kiss me. And not sweet pecks either—no, the kind of kisses that stole your breath and scattered any coherent thoughts. I’d started brushing my teeth at every opportunity, just to be ready. In the last three days alone, I’d probably kissed Logan longer than everyone else in my life combined.
He cracked one eye open. Silver drifted lazily toward my swollen lips. He licked his own and inhaled slowly, making me blush. For a reason I simply called the mate bond, our gazes locked.
Something sizzled between us, a line of heat snapping back and forth, like a damaged wire sparking. My lashes fluttered, and a whimper lodged in my throat as I tried to work out how I should manage this overwhelming feeling.
His fingers instantly hooked my chin, lifting it back. “I’m not done.”
