A Vow of Ruin

“No worries.”

Mags giggled.

Okay, this stuff was no joke.

As intrusive as the serum was, I was glad we did it. We didn’t need everyone thinking we were kidnapping and murdering witches. No one could question that now. That was the good news. The bad news was my task had just escalated from finding Amy and Marina and catching a kidnapper—to hunting down a cold-blooded killer.

Judging by the looks on my family’s faces, they’d worked that out as well, and as much as they wanted to, they couldn’t help me.

Else walked back in as Mom paced around, her face flushed, her eyes bright with fear, with anger. “Why? Why would she do this?”

“Who?” Willow asked.

Mom planted her hands on her hips. “The mother!”

The room went silent. We did not talk shit about the mother, not out loud. That was a risk none of us had ever been willing to take, but the serum was making it hard for Mom to keep how she was feeling inside.

“Mom…”

“I hate her,” Mom cried. “I hate that bitch and what she’s doing to us!”

Shit.

“I know she’s a bitch, Daisy, but you can’t say that.” Else frowned, then cursed, then clamped her hand over her mouth.

“Everyone, stop talking!” Mags yelled.

I sure as hell wasn’t feeling any love toward the goddess either. And I had a very strong urge to share as well. Willow clamped her hand over my mouth, stopping me as soon as my lips parted.

“This is going to get worse before it gets better,” she said. “Everyone split up. Go to your rooms or for a drive, whatever, but somewhere no one will hear you.”

In other words, if you want to keep your secrets a secret, then get the hell gone now. And I had a secret, a big one. Draven filled my head, and I knew I was minutes from spilling the beans. I was not ready to share this bit of information with my entire family yet.

Mom, Else, and Mags took off, going to their rooms, but that wasn’t enough for me. I rushed outside and got in my car.

I didn’t even know where I was going, just that I needed to make sure I didn’t start telling everyone about Draven. As Nia and I hit the road, my stomach rumbled, which wasn’t surprising. I’d found Imogen in the middle of the night; it was now late afternoon and I still hadn’t eaten.

When I hit the city’s outskirts, I took a detour through Big Sam’s drive-through. That should be safe. Order, then get the hell gone. “Can I have a Sam’s double cheese and bacon, fries, and a large Coke.”

“Sure, anything else?” the guy asked.

“No, thank you. But I have to say, you have a great voice. Has anyone told you that?”

“Uh…no.”

Shut up. “It’s deep. It’s actually quite sexy. I bet you get a lot of girls swooning over your voice. I’m not, I already like someone else, he has a sexy voice as well.”

Silence.

My face flushed hot. I couldn’t believe I had just said all of that. “Um…you can just go ahead and cancel that order.”

More silence, then, “Okay.”

I guess that meant I could never have a Sam’s burger ever again for the rest of my life. I drove through and got the hell out of there. Driving to the city had been a huge mistake.

Everyone was still in their rooms when I arrived back at the house, thank the goddess, so I sent Nia to Rose’s room, so she had someone with her, someone who wouldn’t be tempted to spill all their secrets, and rushed back out of the house.

I took the path through the cemetery and out the other side to the field at the back.
