“I’ve been talking your ear off.”
His expression softens. “You haven’t.” He sets his mug aside and looks at me with such sincerity that my heart skips.
“I like listening to you.”
I blink, surprised by his honesty. He continues as though it is the simplest truth in the world.
“I like hearing you talk about the things you love.”
Warmth blooms through my chest. Nobody has ever said something like that to me before. I duck my head, unable to stop smiling.
“So,” I ask after a moment, “what’s your plan today? Are you heading to the office?”
“No. I'm going on a trip. I leave in a few hours. I’m flying to Florida. My brother and I have meetings regarding a few businesses over there.”
“How long will you be gone for?”
He thinks about it. “A couple of days.”
The smile on my face falters before I can stop it. We had only just started finding our footing with each other. What if he came back and everything went back to the way it had been before?
I stare down at my plate, trying not to let the disappointment show. Roman reaches across the bed, his fingers gently cupping my cheek until I’m forced to look at him.
“Hey.” His thumb brushes lightly across my skin. “Why do you suddenly look so sad?”
I try to smile. “I don’t.”
“You do.” A teasing smile tugs at his lips. “Are you missing me already?”
Heat rushes to my face. “I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.” He looks entirely too pleased with himself.
I roll my eyes, trying to hide my embarrassment. He studies me for another second before something shifts in his expression, as though he’s just made up his mind.
“You know…” he says slowly, “we never actually had a honeymoon.”
I tilt my head. “No, we didn’t.”
He smiles. “Come with me.”
“To Florida?”
He nods. “We’ll attend the meetings when I have to work, and the rest of the time…” His shoulders lift in an easy shrug. “We’ll make up for the honeymoon we never had.”
I don’t even try to hide how happy I am. The thought of spending the next few days with him instead of counting them until he returned makes excitement bubble inside me.
“Then yes,” I say, unable to stop smiling. “I’d love to come.”
Roman smiles, the corners of his mouth lifting in that rare way that still catches me off guard. “Great. We're going to Florida.”
“I’ve never been to Florida,” I say, unable to contain my excitement. “I’ve always wanted to visit. How many hours do I have before we leave?”
He reaches for his coffee, taking a slow sip before adding, “You have about two hours.”
“Two hours?” I throw the duvet aside and practically jump out of bed. “Roman, that’s not enough time.”
He chuckles as I hurry toward the walk-in closet, already mentally listing everything I’ll need.
