The hallway seems to tilt beneath my feet. Someone has touched my wife. “Is she breathing?”
“Yes, Boss.”
I close my eyes for half a second, forcing myself to think instead of letting the panic take control.
“Lock the entire area down.”
“We already did.”
“Then keep it locked down. Shut the café down. I want every entrance and exit covered, every camera pulled, and every person who was inside identified.”
“We’re doing that now, but the woman escaped before we could get a description clear enough to track her.”
“Find her.” My voice comes out colder than I feel. “Find whoever did this.”
“Yes, Boss.”
“Where is Aurora?”
“We’re taking her back to the estate. I already called the doctor. He’s meeting us there.”
“I’m on my way.” I end the call and immediately turn toward the conference room. “The meeting is over.”
A few men exchange confused looks. I don’t bother explaining. I move quickly toward the elevator, already calling my driver to get the car ready.
Someone tried to hurt my wife. And I swear to God, they’re going to regret surviving long enough for me to find them.
I call the family’s doctor next. He answers almost immediately.
“Pakhan.”
“Are you on your way?”
“Yes. I’m already heading to the estate. I’ll be there shortly.”
“Make sure she’s okay.” I stop beside the waiting SUV. “I need you to do everything you can. Whatever she needs, whatever you have to do, you do it. I don’t care what it takes. Just make sure my wife is okay.”
There is a brief silence on the other end. “I understand. I’ll do everything within my power.”
I end the call and get into the car. My driver pulls away immediately, and I lean back, staring through the windshield as the city blurs around us.
I keep seeing Aurora lying unconscious on that café floor. Who the fuck attacked? And what the hell did she inject her with? Who is the woman?
I pull out my phone before the car has even cleared the gates and call Sergei. “I want that woman found. Whoever she is, find her and bring her to me. I also want to know who put her up to this.”
“Yes, Boss.”
I end the call and barely wait for the car to stop before I’m out. I rush through the front doors, my heart pounding hard enough to hurt.
Sofía appears from the hallway, her face tense. “The doctor is with her,” she says quickly. “He’s attending to her now.”
I push past her and head straight for our bedroom. The door flies open. Aurora is lying motionless on the bed.
My stomach drops. “What happened to her?”
The doctor, a middle-aged man, looks up from where he’s working beside her.
“I can’t say for certain yet. She appears to have been given a sedative. Her breathing and vital signs are stable, but I need blood work to determine exactly what substance she was given and how much entered her system.”
