Chapter 13

Mina dashed into the kitchen to get her phone before it went to voicemail.

Noah followed. It was after midnight, and middle-of-the-night calls were never good.

The rational side of him knew it could be anything—Brock having a nightmare, or a stomach bug, or just Robbie being an asshole.

But he couldn’t stop thinking about the sweet little boy who might shift at any moment. He didn’t know which would be worse, if he did shift—if Robbie and his shit buddies didn’t know that Brock was a shifter, or if they did.

Mina grabbed the phone just in time. “Robbie?” she said, stabbing at the button. The phone went to speaker.

“Mommy?”

Brock’s voice was trembling, sounding like he was on the verge of tears.

“Brock, sweetie! What’s going on? Are you okay?”

Noah heard Brock sniffle. “I’m okay. I’m just worried and I’m scared and it’s dark.”

Noah leaned against the counter, listening.

“Where are you, baby?”

“I’m outside Daddy’s house, in the shed. I think Daddy and his friends did something bad.”

Noah’s hands clenched on the countertop. If they’d locked Brock in a shed…

He saw Mina’s hand squeeze the phone so tight her knuckles went white. Noah instinctively went up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders, supporting her.

“What did they do that was bad, Brockie?” Mina asked. He could see it was taking all her strength to sound calm for her son.

“They catched a woof,” Brock said. “And they bringed it back to the house and they put it in the shed. So I waited until they were busy and I came outside to see if the woof was hurt and I bringed Daddy’s phone so I could call you and you could fix it like you did for Mr. Noah Gray Woof.”

“That was very smart, sweetie,” Mina said. “Is the wolf hurt?”

Brock seemed calmer now that he had someone on the phone. “I don’t know. I thought it was dead but then it breathed, its sides go up and down but it won’t wake up.”

“Tranked, probably,”Noah murmured. Mina nodded, and he knew they were both thinking about what might happen if the wolf did wake up and Brock was right next to it.

“Okay, sweetie,” Mina said. “You did a good job, but I think you should go back in the house now until I get there.”

“I can’t,” Brock said, and his voice wobbled again. “It’s asleep and I’m afraid they’ll do something bad to it. They’re drinking the brown stuff from the bottle that tastes bad, and they’re yelling at each other.”

Shit. They were drinking whiskey and arguing over the wolf—which was probably a shifter from the Nashville pack.

“Brock,” he said. “This is Mr. Noah. Can you tell me what the wolf looks like?”

“Uh-huh,” he said. “It’s white all over and they were happy because they said they looked for it a long time, but then they got mad and yelled at each other.” He paused, and then he added, “I think it’s a person-woof. There was a man and then they chased him into the woods and they came back and they had a woof instead.”

Oh, fuck.

Noah had only ever heard of two white shifter wolves. The first one was a female. The other one had helped Jesse Travis and his mate Sophia escape from Alexander Grant’s compound a few months back, after he’d abducted them and tortured Jesse. If this was that wolf, Robbie and Briscoe weren’t the only ones who’d been looking for him.

This was about to turn into one hot shifter mess.

“Brock, listen to me,” he said. “Go back in the house. Don’t let them see you. Stay in your room. I’m on my way.”

“Mommy?” Brock said.
