Noah turned to face her. “I’m not blaming you for not understanding,” he said. “I just want you to see there’s a lot of good in our world. Shifters aren’t perfect, but we love our friends and families just like humans, and we want to protect them and see them safe and happy.”
He put his hands on her shoulders. “I wish so much you could have the time you need to get used to all this. And I wish you had more choices. But the reality is, Brock won’t be safe unless you join a powerful wolf pack, one that can protect both of you. So tomorrow I’m calling a pack I know in Idaho, and asking if they’ll take you and Brock in.”
Mina stared at him. Idaho? Joining a wolf pack?
“Noah, I can’t just up and go to Idaho. I can’t take Brock across state lines, for one thing. And I can’t just go live with a bunch of wolves in the wilderness…”
Noah smiled. “Silverlake is nice,” he said. “They have cabins a lot like this one, and electricity, and satellite TV, so it’s not like you’ll be living in caves and hunting rabbits for food. The alpha—the head of the pack—is a stand-up guy, and his mate is human, so the pack shouldn’t have a problem accepting you.”
“But I—” She shook her head. “I don’t know. Noah, I can’t make a decision like this without thinking it over.”
“I know it’s a lot,” he said. “But the danger from Robbie isn’t going to go away, and Flynn and his crew can’t protect you forever. And…” He trailed off, looking troubled.
Mina felt cold dread in her stomach. “Noah, what is it? I swear, if you’re keeping anything else from me…”
Noah closed his eyes. “Shit,” he muttered. “I don’t know how to do this.”
“What?”
He blew out a huge breath and opened his eyes. “Silverlake is a great pack, one of the best, but even so, by law an unmated human can’t be part of the pack. And even though Brock is a shifter, if neither of his parents is a pack member, he doesn’t have full protection under shifter law either.”
“So what are you saying?”
Noah took a deep breath. “I want you to be my mate, Mina. If we’re together, then I could apply to the Silverlake pack for all of us, as a family. I could take care of you and protect you, and make sure nothing ever happens to you.”
