Chapter 21

Mina woke up the next morning with a feeling of dread coursing through her. Noah was still asleep, his chest tucked up tight against her back, his arms wrapped around her.

But the rest of the bed was empty. No Brock.

Mina bolted upright, her stomach clenched in fear. He’s fine, she told herself. He probably just went looking for the bathroom.

In a place filled with murderous jaguars and half-crazy bears and naked lions.

Noah had jolted awake at her movement and rolled out of bed into a fighting crouch, his eyes flashing with gold flecks.

“Brock,” was all she said.

In a second he was out the door. Mina had borrowed one of Tank’s t-shirts, which came almost to her knees, so she didn’t bother with jeans.

They banged through the house, shoving open the bedroom and bathroom doors and then checking the living area on their way through. Flynn came to the railing of the loft balcony, hair wilder than ever, looking sleepy and annoyed. His dick was out again, too. God, didn’t the man ever wear clothes?

“What the fuck?” he muttered as they passed underneath.

“Brock?” Mina was calling. “Brock, where are you?”

She dashed down the porch steps, Noah’s footsteps pounding behind her, and froze.

Brock was on his tiptoes, unhooking the big padlock from the door of the crazy shed. Even from here, Mina could hear the snarls of the white wolf locked inside.

How the hell had this happened? Where was Tank?

“Brock, no!” she yelled.

Too late. Brock dropped the lock and opened the door to the shed. Mina jerked into motion again, but Noah was already racing towards Brock, hands outstretched, only to stop dead just behind him.

The white wolf wasn’t attacking. Its snarls had died away, and it was standing with its head cocked, watching Brock through its golden eyes.

All the shifters had come out of their buildings when Mina cried out. One by one, they stopped in their tracks as they took in the scene. Nobody seemed to know what to do—they didn’t want to spook the white wolf into attacking.

Tank had come out of the shed next door, naked and dripping, as though he’d been washing up. When he saw Brock in the doorway of the crazy shed, he gave a low moan and hunched over as if in pain.

Brock just stood there, gazing into the wolf’s eyes, his body relaxed.

“Hello, Mr. Tristan White Woof,” he said.

The whole compound went completely still.

Finally Mina said quietly, “Don’t go near him, Brockie. He’s dangerous.”

Brock shook his head, his gaze still locked with the wolf’s. “He’s just scared. And sad. People hurt him.”

“How do you know?” Noah asked, his voice low.

“I don’t know,” Brock said. “I just do.”

Brock and the white wolf walked toward each other, still staring. Mina remembered that day in her office, when Brock had reached into Noah’s cage and she’d found them standing there, staring into each other’s eyes.

Maybe her son really was a wolf whisperer.

But she couldn’t help but remember the wolf attacking Tank last night, clawing his best friend over and over. The thought of Brock’s tender skin shredding under his claws…

Behind her, she heard a gun cock. Flynn. She prayed he didn’t have to shoot the wolf, but it still made her feel better knowing he’d do what was necessary to protect her son.
