Fuck, fuck, fuck. Noah bit his lips. He shouldn’t let Brock do anything that might be dangerous. But if anything happened to Mina, it would destroy Brock as well as him.

“I’m trusting you, Wolf,” he growled.

Tristan nodded. He drew Brock forward and placed one of his chubby hands on the top of Mina’s head, and the other on her forehead, as he’d done before. Tristan put his hands on top of Brock’s.

Noah crouched down and put his hands on Brock’s shoulders. “I’m here, buddy,” he said. “You can do this.”

Brock nodded.

Tristan said to Brock, “I need you to close your eyes and think about how you felt when you were petting me, out in the shed. When you didn’t want me to be sad and hurt and confused. Try to help your mom not be hurt and confused, like you did for me. Can you do that?”

Brock said shakily, “I never did it for anybody who wasn’t a woof, but I’ll try.”

“Okay then.” Tristan said. “That’s all you have to do. I’ll do the rest.”

Brock and Tristan both closed their eyes. Brock looked relaxed, almost happy, but Tristan’s expression went from focus, to intense concentration, to pain.

Gradually, Mina stopped trembling. The heartrending moans stopped, and her muscles relaxed.

She took a deep, shuddering breath, and Noah’s heart clenched. Then she began breathing normally. Tristan smiled, his face filled with relief.

Noah sank to the floor at the end of the couch and tried really, really hard not to bawl like a baby.

Mina felt like she was hacking her way through a jungle of pain and sorrow and despair. She saw wolves and people, whole and happy, and then there was blood everywhere, blood and death and pain.

And there was Justin. Lying in her arms, body shattered by the explosion that destroyed his cabin. She was sitting on the floor, cradling his head and chest in her lap, and there was blood, so much blood, and she knew he was dying.

He was whispering to her, and she was trying to hold on to every word, every moment, but she could only hear one last plea.

Save my pack.

And then he reached up and touched her forehead, the blood on his hand warm and sticky, but instead of everything going blurry and fading away like it usually did, it became sharper and clearer, pieces fitting together like a jigsaw puzzle.

She took a sharp breath and opened her eyes.

“She’s awake.”

Noah was there.

Of course he was; he was always protecting her. He was sitting on the couch with her, her head on a pillow in his lap. He was stroking her hair with one hand, and the other rested on her hip.

Mina struggled to sit up. Brock was sitting at the dining room table with the other three shifter men, eating pancakes. He slid down from his chair and ran over to her, throwing himself into her lap.

“Mommy, you’re awake! Do you feel better? Mr. Tristan White Woof and I helped your brain, and now you’re awake and do you want pancakes? Mr. Roary Lion cooked them and they’re very very good.”

Mina hugged him fiercely. “I feel much better,” she said. “And I’m very proud of you. You helped Mr. Tristan.”

“And then we helped you,” Brock said. “Do you remember things now?”

Mina looked around the room. Everyone was staring at her.

She put a hand to her head. The excruciating pain was gone, but she still had a dull headache. And she remembered…

Oh, God. She remembered everything.
