The lightning wasn’t surrounding him; the bond wasn’t taking. It was slipping off him.
“I can’t,” he whispered. “My power—it’s bound.”
And then behind him, she saw Brock, growling, with a knife in his hand. With one quick motion, he stabbed Emon in the back.
Chapter 40
Emon felt the knife blade go in. It cut, and twisted, and then small fingers were yanking the inhibitor out of his back.
Lightning crackled around him and Trish, crackled in his veins. Deep inside him, his dragonfire returned.
He was Draken, and magic ran through his veins.
And he was mated. The mating bond encircled him and Trish, making them one, making them whole, making them strong.
It healed the wound in his leg, restoring his lost blood, his lost powers.
He rose to his feet, his wolf-mate at his side, and roared, blasting fire into the air.
He flung a shield spell at the portal just as it finished forming, blocking access. With the other hand, he hit the last soldier in the balcony with lightning, and he fell over the balustrade and landed on the floor.
Then, through the noise and the carnage, a clear, magically amplified voice yelled, “Stop!”
Everyone froze.
Fucking Grange. That lion just did not stay down.
He’d captured Mayah in another spell rope, and covered them with a magical shield. At her throat was an atherias knife that glowed with magic. Johnson, the coward, stood behind him.
“Open the portal, Al-Maddeiri,” Grange snarled. “Johnson and I leave now, or the princess is dead on the floor.”
They didn’t want to kill Mayah. She was too valuable to them.
“Don’t do it, Brother,” she called.
But could he take that chance?
“Five seconds,” Grange said. “Four. Three. Two…
The wall next to him exploded, and a giant red tail smashed through it, hitting Grange in the back. Mayah kicked backwards, getting him in the balls. And then a huge dragon claw reached through the hole in the wall and grabbed him.
Mikah and Cazbek, in human form, slid down Zakerek’s leg and landed on the floor, shooting spell nets as they came. Emon joined them, capturing the rest of the surviving Gen-X operatives.
Suddenly, Emon felt his shield dissolve. He turned just in time to see Johnson dash through the portal.
He raced over there, but the portal shimmered and vanished, and Emon was left pounding the wall where it had been.
Fuck it all. Johnson was the ringleader, the one he really wanted. The man with the average, forgettable face.
But Emon would never forget it. This wasn’t over.
But for today, it was. They’d won the battle. He and Trish had saved their people—with a little help from their frenemies.
And then Brock looked around, frowning.
“Where’s Daddy?”
Mina, still naked from Changing back from wolf, went over to where Grange was lying on the floor, groaning and bleeding.
