Remy took a deep breath, and told his story.
As he did, Brandon’s eyes began to glow feral, panther green. He was pissed. Off.
With a right to be, probably.
But that wasn’t going to help Remy when Brandon held him down with his alpha dominance and clawed him to ribbons.
When he finished, Brandon was silent for a few minutes, thinking. Nobody else dared say a word.
Jaeda walked over to Brandon and nosed his leg. He rested his hand on her neck and absently rubbed the base of her skull.
Maybe that was a good sign?
Finally Brandon said, “So what I’m hearing is, either you reunited Jaeda with her lost animal, or you served as a bridge so that a spirit entity could take over her body.”
Fuck. Somebody please tell him he didn’t do the second one. “Um. I guess that pretty much sums it up.”
Brandon turned to Squatch. “Titan? Do you have anything to add?”
Squatch had been watching Jaeda, frowning.
“It is her own animal,” he said. Remy breathed a sigh of relief. Jaeda noticed an extra-large dust mote floating in a beam of sunlight, wiggled her butt, and pounced on it.
Squatch went on, “Except, it never had a true form.”
“Explain,” Brandon said.
“It was…” Squatch frowned, “Potential energy. It didn’t know what it was, so it became what Remy was, and what it was most familiar with. A leopard.”
Brandon sighed. “Well, I guess that’s what we’re left with. Can she come back?”
“I think so. I still see Jaeda, behind the leopard.”
Remy’s stomach unclenched for the first time since Jaeda had Changed.
“So how do we get her back?” Brandon ran his hand through his hair. “Can you reach her?”
“I think Remy has to do it. Maybe it will help if he sees her in the spirit world.”
Squatch sat down on the floor next to Jaeda and gestured to Remy. Remy got out of his chair.
“I hope this works,” he murmured. “I could use all the mojo you’ve got.”
Squatch glared at him. “You’ve used enough mojo that wasn’t yours.”
Ouch.
Remy sat down on the floor, eye level to the leopard. He put his hands on both cheek ruffs, and she licked his face.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m adorable,” he said. “You’re a good leopard. Can you pay attention now?”
She reached out one paw, very slowly, and batted at him playfully. Her tail lashed.
“Yeah, very funny. This is serious.”
She stretched her neck until they were touching noses, and he had to look at her cross-eyed.
Brandon muttered something about moving to Bali.
