Fernandez looked like he was about to pass out when he saw Remy and Jaeda.
“Who are you people?” he asked Colt.
“Is that Jaeda?” Squatch asked.
“Yeah,” said Callie. “Isn’t she cool?”
“I think I hit my head harder than I thought,” said Fernandez. He sank down by the side of the road and put his head in his hands.
Remy took that opportunity to Change. He looked at Sutcliffe. “Now what the hell do we do with him?”
Colt said, “She could just suffocate him. That would save a lot of trouble.”
A bear-paw-tentacle moved up to cover Sutcliffe’s mouth. Sutcliffe immediately fainted.
“Jaeda, cut it out,” Brandon said. “The cops are on the way.” They could hear sirens in the distance. “We can’t have a blob-bear and a body by the side of the road when they get here. We’ll have to turn him over to the human authorities.”
“What if he tells people about this?” Callie gestured at the scene.
“Who the hell is going to believe him?” Fernandez said. “I’m seeing it, and I don’t believe it.”
“Either one of them might come after us, though,” Brandon said. “Try to find out the truth.”
“Not me,” Fernandez said. “Leopard Boy saved my ass in that building. I don’t care if you’re aliens from another planet.”
Brock said, “Sutcliffe will probably think he hallucinated the whole thing. If he doesn’t, I know some people who can pay him a visit in prison, and he won’t remember a thing.”
He flicked a look at Fernandez, who held up a hand. “I already forgot it all,” he said.
The sirens grew closer. “Okay,” Brandon said. “Everyone except Colt, get out of here. We need a victim for the police. Jaeda, let Sutcliffe go. If you can’t Change back, find somewhere to hide.” He shook his head. “I can’t believe I’m talking to a fucking blob bear. Remy, this is your fault.”
“I had nothing to do with it!”
Brandon said to Jaeda. “If you can Change, I wish to hell you would. I could use you as a witness for the cops. And you’re freaking me out.”
Remy said, “Come on, babe. You can do it.”
The blob-bear shimmered and turned into Jaeda. Naked.
“Shit,” Remy said. “Someone find her some clothes before the cops come.” He looked down at himself. “And some for me, while you’re at it.” He’d lost his pants when he Changed.
Someone tossed a guard’s pants at Remy, and he put them on. When he looked back at Jaeda, she was dressed in a black leather combat suit.
Remy’s mouth dropped open. “How did you do that?”
“I think I borrowed some magic from a dragon.”
“Can you pick what you wear?” Brandon asked wearily. “Something a little more normal? And possibly victim-y?”
She changed the clothes to the torn, dirty outfit she’d been wearing before she Changed. “Man,” Remy said. “I hope you can keep this power. That other outfit was hot.”
She smiled up at him, and his heart turned over. “Me too.”
Brandon was looking off in the distance, where red and blue flashing lights could be seen. “They’re coming,” he said. “Everybody go—and clean up any bodies. Live prisoners only, please.”
Chapter 35
Remy refused to leave Jaeda, which she was grateful for. It had been a very weird and stressful night. “I can be you just as well as you can,” he told Colt, so they traded places, to Colt’s disgust.
