They weren’t doing it for her. They were doing it for Kane, to try to make him feel wanted. She was just the excuse. Why couldn’t he see that?

She bumped into him affectionately. “Now you’re making me sound like an egotist.”

He said, “I didn’t mean—”

“Kidding,” she said. “I can see I have to teach you about jokes.”

“Ha ha,” he said. “See? You made me laugh, which is more than Rafe can manage. That should feed your inflated ego.”

“Well, I am a celebrity, after all,” she said, grinning at him. “Raven, star of the Midnight Lounge.”

“That’s true.” He smiled. That smile truly was breathtaking—the more so because it was so rare.

He still looked confused, though. As if he couldn’t figure out why anyone would throw a barbecue for him. He has a real resistance to happiness, Rachelle realized. Had Selina done that to him?

Or had Rachelle done it herself, by disappearing and leaving him with a burden of guilt? Her heart broke to think that her beautiful Hunter didn’t think he deserved to be happy.

Without thinking, she stopped walking and reached up, pulling his face down to hers and kissing him gently on the mouth. Immediately his arms curved around her, and she pressed herself to him. The feel and the taste of him filled her senses. Their tongues tangled, and Rachelle could feel his cock getting hard, straining against the cutoff shorts he’d put on for swimming.

Body-melting heat rushed through her, and she wanted to forget Kane’s pack and spend all afternoon doing this. And more.

Just one kiss, and she was already getting wet.

She couldn’t deny that she wanted him. Wanted to see him smile, to make him happy. To feel his warm strength protecting her. That was all she’d ever wanted from the moment she first met him in a dark Seattle alley.

But it was too soon. There were too many secrets.

She pulled away gently and smiled at him. Then she ran off down the path. “Come on, Hunter,” she said. “We have some asses to kick!”

When they got to the lake, there was a pile of inflatable weapons waiting. They really were in the shape of giant sausages, about three feet long—at least, most of them were. Rachelle also saw a pickle, a huge peanut, and an inflatable Washington Monument.

Rachelle decided she really liked Kane’s pack. And before she was through, she was going to get Kane to like them too.

“Hey Terin!” Rafe was calling to his blond-haired, fragile-looking mate. “I got us a new weapon!”

Kane frowned at Rafe. “She’s pregnant,” he said. “Should she be doing this?”

“Healer says she can,” Rafe said. “Donatello is only the size of a peanut. He’s all safe in there.”

Rachelle turned to Kane. Donatello? she mouthed.

“I saw that,” Rafe said. “Donatello was a superhero. A mutant ninja turtle. It’s a cool name.”

Terin just rolled her eyes. Not Donatello, she mouthed back to Rachelle, shaking her head. Rachelle smothered a giggle.

Rafe bounded over to Terin. “You’re going to love this.” He pulled a black garbage bag out of the truck bed and unwrapped a three-foot-long inflated penis, complete with balls.

Emma and Terin immediately collapsed in giggles.

“It has handles!” Sophia objected, reaching for it. “That’s not fair.”

“Hey, stop grabbing my balls,” Rafe said, jerking the penis out of reach. “They’re delicate.”

Rachelle turned to see Kane doing another facepalm. “This is why I don’t hang out with these idiots.”

Rafe splashed off into the water. Terin tossed her cover-up into the back of the truck and went with him, taking the inflated dick from him without batting an eyelash. She whispered something in Rafe’s ear, and he grabbed her ass under the water.

The others dashed for their weapons. Kane didn’t seem to care what their weapon was, being preoccupied with trying to pretend the pack were all total strangers to him, and he’d wandered into this madhouse by accident.
