“And I outed Gen-X and the Agency,” Jesse added. “So they can’t come after you either.”
“And he got commendations for Kane and the pack,” Emma added. “Jesse has mad negotiating skillz.”
“Fuck yeah,” Jace added. “Somebody should bake him a pie or something.”
Rachelle propelled herself out of bed and threw her arms around Jesse’s neck, giving him a huge hug. “I don’t bake,” she said. “But I’ll think of something.”
Jesse’s face grew red. “It’s all good,” he said. “You’re pack. You’re Kane’s mate.” Jace and Emma glared at him.
Jesse smacked himself on the side of the head. “Shit. You are his mate, aren’t you? Or did I just do a Rafe?”
Rachelle smiled, her chest expanding with warmth. “No, we’re mates.” It felt weird to say it, but so good. “Thank you all so much, for everything you’ve done.”
“You make Kane happy,” Jace said. “Never thought I’d see that day.”
“Speaking of Kane,” Emma said, “we should probably get out of here and let you both rest.” They rose and filed out, Jace last. At the door he turned and said, “Welcome to the Silverlake pack.”
Two days later, Rachelle was sitting by the fire pit with some of the pack when Kane came out of the cabin, carrying a huge picnic basket. He walked over, his knee still a little stiff from the injury. The healers had assured her, though, that it would be okay in another day or so.
“What’s in the pic-a-nic basket?” That was Grizzly, Emma’s surrogate father, who was visiting from over on the next mountain. He was a bear shifter, and apparently he loved to do hokey Yogi Bear imitations.
“Surprises,” Kane said. “And not for you losers. I’m taking my girl up to the waterfall for a romantic sunset picnic. A private one. So if I smell any of your furry asses anywhere in the vicinity, I’ll bleed you.” He smiled pleasantly around the group.
“Nice social skills,” Mick said, taking a swig of beer. “You’re really coming along with that.”
Rachelle smothered a grin.
“Just don’t ask him if he needs h-e-l-p with that basket,” Rafe said. “Please.”
“I’m good,” Kane said.
“It’s about time,” Rafe grumbled. “After you ‘resting’ your leg for the last couple of days. ‘Help, Rafe, I need a beer. Help, Rafe, I need a sandwich. Help, Rafe, I need someone to hold my dick while I take a leak.’ I should never have taught you that word. I’ve created a monster.”
“I did not ask him to hold my dick,” Kane informed the group at large, who were snickering. “Because, gross and disturbing. But what are friends for, if not to h-e-l-p you when you’re temporarily disabled?”
He slapped Rafe on the shoulder. “I love asking for help now. Except the dick-holding kind.” He paused. “Unless it’s from Rachelle.”
“She holds your dick while you take a leak? I did not want to know that,” Rafe said.
“Shut up, Rafe.” Kane was smiling, though. Rachelle loved seeing him smile.
“God, he’s grinning again. It’s like living with a jack o’ lantern,” Rafe said.
“Shut the fuck up,” Kane said.
“You guys are sooooo cute,” Rachelle said. “I love your little bromance.”
“Me too,” said Terin. “Adorbs.”
“Cut it out, you two,” Kane and Rafe growled simultaneously. Rachelle and Terin high-fived.
“Come on, Raven,” Kane said. “I want some real romance. And someone to hold my dick who isn’t Rafe.”
“TMI!” Rafe called as they walked off.
Rachelle slid her hand into Kane’s huge warm one. He held the basket in his free hand, swinging it slightly.
“Please tell me there’s ice cream in the basket,” Rachelle said.
