Daigo turned to look at his wife's friend and shook his head. Spinning away, he walked to the window and felt rather than saw his mother come up next to him.
"She's strong."
"That she is." He smiled grimly.
"How about I get us all some tea?" Tammy announced to the room in general.
"Nothing for me, thanks," Daigo told her without turning around.
"I- Daigo, the doctor." At Tammy's statement, he turned away from the window.
"How's my wife?"
He saw Dr. Middleton look around the room and gestured impatiently. "They're friends. How is she?"
"Doing very well. We managed to stop the bleeding, and she's now awake and demanding to see her babies," the doctor told him with a smile.
Sagging against the wall, Daigo closed his eyes in relief.
"Oh, thank God!" Tammy exclaimed.
"I need to see her, now," he said quietly.
"Of course. Let me show you to her room." She looked around at the others. "As soon as her husband has five minutes with her, you may visit. I'm afraid I'm going to insist on it being kept short."
"Go ahead, Daigo," his mother said with a smile. "We'll wait to be summoned."
He found her propped up in bed and wearing a soft peach-colored velour robe with buttons down the front. Her braided hair was secured behind her head, and she looked alert and incredibly beautiful.
"Darling." Extending a hand, she smiled at him. It was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.
"Hey, you checked out on me. That wasn't nice." Gripping her hand tightly, he sat on the edge of the bed and felt the relief coursing through his body.
"Sorry." She leaned against him and inhaled. "I need to see them."
"Of course you do." He sought the doctor's eyes and received a nod.
"They're bringing in a wheelchair," one of the nurses told her as she fussed with the IV. "Give yourself ten minutes. You just went through surgery, and the babies are sleeping peacefully."
"All right." Tipping her head up, she looked at her husband. "How do they look?"
"Perfect." He kissed her forehead. "Our daughters are so alike, I doubt we'll ever be able to tell them apart."
She smiled widely at that. "And our son. Be honest."
"Aren't I always?" he asked lightly. "His lungs are a little underdeveloped, but he's getting the utmost care. They're all fawning over him. He's going to be hell to live with after this, considering all the attention he's receiving. And they're beautiful, just like you," he whispered hoarsely. "I'll never forget how well you did."
"I love you," she whispered back.
"I adore you. And I've been receiving a number of phone calls from some of the 'wives,' demanding to know what's going on. Also, my mother, Tammy, and her fellow are here."
Her eyes rounded. "Can they come in?"
"They sure can. I just wanted to see with my own eyes that you're well." Tipping her chin up, he rubbed his nose on hers and closed his eyes. "Don't ever scare me like that again."
"Never." She clung to him. "It's over. We did it."
"We did." Brushing her lips with his, he just held her for a minute before letting go.
