Something he regretted to this day.

A slender brunette rushed around a corner, almost colliding with Aurora.

The action brought Kordell back into the busy detachment.

“Ginny! You’re home.” Aurora thrust her arms around the woman. “I’ve missed you.” She withdrew from the embrace and turned to him. “Kord, this is my best friend and extraordinary reporter, Ginny Davis. She was on a special assignment in the Philippines. Ginny, this is survivalist Kordell Greene.”

He took off his gloves and stuck out his hand. “Nice to meet you, Ginny.”

She returned the gesture. “You too. Rory, where have you been hiding this hunk?”

Aurora’s cheeks flushed, giving off a rosy hue. “Funny. He lives in Alberta and is part of the new Canadian Watchers Squad. He’s helping me with—”

“I’ve heard all about CWS.” Ginny’s eyes brightened. “I’ve been following your father’s unique team and would love to interview you. Perhaps over a coffee?”

“Umm, I’m not sure if we have time right now.” Kordell gazed at Aurora. How much would she allow Kordell to say?

“Ginny, we’re on a special case. Maybe later. If Kord agrees, of course.” Aurora unzipped her parka. “Why are you at the station?”

“I caught wind that SBK had returned and tried to get some information out of Sergeant Wheeler, but he refused to comment on an ongoing investigation. I thought the case was closed, not ongoing.” She latched onto Aurora’s arm. “Wait, is that the special case you two are working on?” Her gaze traveled up and down. “And why aren’t you in your uniform?”

“I really can’t say, but—”

“Morning, ladies.” A woman with long straight raven hair appeared with a stack of files. “Ready for another fun-filled day?”

“Morning, Jade.” Aurora wiggled out of her coat and hung it on a rack in the hallway.

“Who is this handsome dude?” she asked.

Heat flushed Kordell’s neck, and he concentrated on shedding his coat.

“A visiting friend. His name is Kordell Greene. Kord, this is one of our civilian employees here at the station. Jade Kramer. Jade keeps us in line.”

“Nice to meet you.”

A door opened, and a bald man stuck his head out. “Hunt, my office. Now.”

“Someone is in trooouble,” Jade said in a singsongy tone and smirked before gliding down another hallway.

“Gotta run, Ginny.” Aurora clasped her friend’s hand. “Listen, I’m heading out of town for a bit. Please remember to lock your doors. Sweetwood Falls isn’t as safe as it used to be.”

Ginny’s eyes widened. “He is back, isn’t he?”

Aurora’s lips flattened, but she didn’t answer. Her silence spoke volumes.

And her friend obviously got the message.

“Good thing I’m picking up my trusty German shepherd on my way home.” Ginny patted Aurora’s hand. “I’ll be careful. You too. I know what that case did to you. Love you.”

“Ditto, my friend,” Aurora whispered.

“God’s got you.” The reporter exited the building.

Kordell leaned closer. “What did she mean by that? What did the case do to you? Other than the obvious, of course.”

“Nothing.” Her lips knit together. “Let’s go before Wheeler pokes his head out again. I told him about you earlier this morning, and he wanted to talk to us both.” Aurora hustled toward the man’s office.

Kordell raked his fingers through his long bangs and followed, bracing himself for the opposition he guessed was coming. After all, CWS always had to explain how their unit worked.
