Or admit that this was SBK.
“Sure. I’ll email Hill because it would sound better coming from him than me.” She toggled over to her inbox, tapped out the email, and hit Send. “Done.”
“Thanks. I get the impression Dirk won’t like working with CWS.”
“Dirk loves power and hates working with most people. Even Nadine.” Aurora grabbed another chip from her impromptu supper of chips, crackers, cheese, dips, and various fruits. Not the healthiest of suppers but the only thing she could find in their staff lunchroom.
“What’s up with you two?”
“That’s a long story, and I’m tired. Can we shelve it for now?”
He raised his hands in a gesture of surrender. “None of my business. I was just curious.”
She quickly typed the end of her report and submitted it into their system, closing her laptop. “Dirk and I were engaged.”
Kordell’s jaw dropped. “I didn’t realize that. I saw a wedding ring on his finger.”
She dug her nails into her palms, inviting the pain to distract her from the hurt still raging through her body. “He married my former best friend.” She prayed that would be enough information to end the conversation.
“Touchy subject. I get it. It’s hard coming back from lost love.” He snatched a handful of chips, stuffing a few in his mouth.
Obviously, he had a story behind those words. Had Kordell also been betrayed by someone he loved? Or—
The door burst open, and Wheeler marched in with Dirk at his heels. “Hunt, back away from your laptop,” Wheeler ordered.
Kordell sprang to his feet. “What’s going on?”
“None of your concern, Greene.” Dirk gestured for her to get up. “I need to look at your laptop.”
Aurora placed her hands on the table, rising. “What? Why?”
“We received a tip to check your laptop and that you’re not exactly who you claim to be.” Wheeler crossed his arms and shifted his stance, asserting his authority.
“What? That’s preposterous. You know who I am.” Her pulse spiraled out of control. “SBK is up to something. That’s the only answer.”
Dirk put on latex gloves and sat, opening the lid. “Sign in for me.”
“Aurora, wait,” Kordell said. “Let me get in touch with our family lawyer.”
Wheeler waggled a finger at him. “Stay out of this!”
“I have nothing to hide, Kord.” Aurora typed in her password. “See for yourself.”
Dirk fiddled with her programs.
“What are you looking for?” Aurora asked.
“Not sure.” He clicked on her browser history.
Multiple sites for building a bomb were displayed in the list.
Aurora sucked in a breath. “I did not search those.”
Wheeler nudged her out of the way, pointing to the screen. “So you didn’t find out how to build a bomb?”
“No! Someone is setting me up!”
Dirk stood. “Detain her for questioning. I’m taking her laptop to the digital team for analysis.”
