“Got your six.” Hayley’s voice boomed through the comms.
“Stack up,” the ERU’s leader commanded.
Kordell noted the team’s tight formation.
“Breaching. Go! Go! Go!” Aurora tapped on the unit leader’s shoulder.
The team entered the building, and Kordell held his breath, waiting to hear what was going on inside.
Various updates sailed through the comms by the team.
“Clear left.”
“Clear right.”
“Hunt, you need to see this,” the team leader said.
Kordell’s muscles tightened as he waited for Aurora’s response.
“So SBK was never here,” Aurora said. “This proves it. Checking for any traps.”
“What is it, Aurora?” Kordell needed her to be his eyes.
“Laptop. It’s clear. Pressing the Enter key.”
Seconds later, a robotic voice sounded through the comms. “Nice try, Rory. Did you really think I’d be here? I knew Mic would find me in the system, and you fell for it.”
Kordell stiffened at the mention of his sister. SBK had played them and lured them here. “Aurora, it’s a trap. Get out! Hayley, any movement from your vantage point?”
“None.”
“He’s here somewhere. Checking the tree line.” Kordell unleashed his Glock and sprinted across the parking lot, raising it.
“Kord, fall back!” Aurora’s command pounded in his ear. “Team, evacuate!”
Seconds later, the ERU and Aurora burst through the doors.
A sinister buzzing drifted low over the trees and grew louder as panic spiked in Kordell’s chest. A drone burst into view at an alarming speed, with metal dangling from it, gleaming in the sunlight.
A machine gun.
Kordell sucked in a breath. “Aurora, attack drone! Take cover!”
Gunfire erupted, the machine gun peppering rounds of bullets at the entrance with bone-jarring force.
A team member dropped to the ground, blood spewing out from his shoulder.
Lord, no!
Aurora and the unit dove behind concrete barriers, trapped from escaping the drone’s relentless attack.
“Hayley, take it down! Take it down!” Kordell’s command came out breathless as he aimed and fired toward the drone.
A shot whizzed near his location.
Seconds later, the drone exploded, pieces raining from the sky.
Hayley had hit the target.
