‘Cool!’ Dana’s eyes popped. ‘You’re lucky. Mr Devlin doesn’t take pity on anyone. Especially people that have only been at the company for two minutes. So where are you working today?’
‘Not sure. It all depends on how my meeting with him this morning goes.’
‘Oh, okay. We’d better get going then. After being off sick yesterday, I’ve got a shit load of work to catch up on and you have a date with Daddy Devlin.’
‘It’s not a date!’ I replied, my voice filled with horror. ‘It’s a meeting. Although I’ve researched the company, I wouldn’t be surprised if he still found a reason to fire me. He seems like the type.’
‘You never know,’ Dana said as we got into the lift. ‘Maybe he’ll take pity on you again.’ She pushed the button to her floor, whilst I tapped the button which would take me to the press office, a few floors up.
Valerie emailed last night to say she’d call me there when Mr Devlin was ready to see me.
‘Doubtful.’ I huffed.
‘Good luck!’ Dana stepped out of the lift.
‘Thanks,’ I replied just as the doors started to close. ‘Something tells me I’ll need it.’
This was it.
I was on my way up to the top floor to meet Mr Devlin.
And to discover my fate.
‘Go straight through,’ Valerie said when I arrived.
My heart thundered against my ribcage.
I dug my nails into my palm.
Just do your best.
Although Valerie had told me to go into his office, I still knocked on the door.
‘Enter,’ his deep, gravelly voice commanded. I pushed the door open, trying to stop my hand from shaking. ‘Sit,’ Mr Devlin said, without even looking up from the manuscript he was reading.
After smoothing down my long, brown pleated skirt, I sat in the chair opposite him.
I waited several beats for him to speak, but he said nothing, which only made my heart race faster.
When he eventually looked up from his desk, my breath hitched.
He might be annoying, but he was very nice to look at.
It’d only been a day since I’d seen him and I remembered that he was good-looking, but somehow he’d become even more attractive.
He wasn’t wearing a suit jacket today, so I had an uninterrupted view of his crisp white shirt which fitted perfectly over his broad chest.
The sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, exposing muscular forearms.
Whereas he was clean shaven when I last saw him, today he had a hint of stubble across his square jaw.
His lips looked plump and pillow-soft.
Although his eyes looked a little tired, they still sparkled and were the most striking shade of blue I’d ever seen.
And his hair. It was immaculately cut, but I liked how tousled it was at the top. Like he’d run his hand through it repeatedly.
I tore my gaze away. It didn’t matter if he was handsome. It didn’t make up for his horrible personality and rudeness.
