He got her records—her unedited records.

Maybe she should be angry.

Maybe she should be annoyed that he did this without telling her, and then realize it would be a bit hypocritical since she did not tell him about the lawsuit.

Funny, they were both trying to accomplish the same goal tangentially. Even though they're fractured, they’re still of the same mind.

Honey’s eyes scan the records, and her stomach twists with each symptom she reported. And was dismissed by Dr. Mortimer, in person and in her records.

Addendum entered by E. Mortimer, MD: Patient anxious. Discussed hydration, rest, and normal discomforts of late pregnancy.

Addendum entered by E. Mortimer, MD: Patient has history of anxiety regarding pregnancy symptoms. Reinforced hydration and rest. Follow up at next scheduled appointment unless symptoms worsen.

Patient is young and anxious. First pregnancy. No indication for escalation at this time. Continue reassurance.

“Reassurance, where?” Honey growls, and Daisy makes a similar noise from her lap that makes her smile. “Your daddy did good, baby girl.”

And he did.

Mason did this for her.

He risked his job and everything he worked for for this little flash drive. If St. Mary’s finds out, they could fire him, sue him, ruin his career before it even starts. They would make him pay for it.

And he knew the risks and did it anyway.

Granted, she doesn’t think she can just walk into Lorraine’s office and say, ‘You know, Daisy and I were on a walk, and we found this!’ but…

It’s honestly worth the peace of her own mind.

She's not crazy.

She knew something was wrong, and it was, and it’s not her fault that she wasn’t heard.

It’s the hospital's fault, it’s Dr. Mortimer’s fault.

And that, for now, is enough.

They know the hospital changed the records, and they can keep hammering them to turn over the backlogs because she knows what’s in them.

Her phone buzzes on her end table, and Honey suddenly realizes she is in possession of something maybe—definitely—illegal. She looks around the room like the police are going to burst out of a corner, yelling, “Gotcha!”

Exiting out of everything and ripping the flash drive from her computer, she reaches for her phone and answers without seeing who it is.

“Hello?” Honey answers, placing her laptop at the foot of her bed and adjusting Daisy on her lap.

“Honey…”

She freezes at Mason’s voice.

He sounds… off.

Wrong.

Goosebumps break out all over her body at the sound of it.

“Mason?” Honey asks, her voice softening. “Are you okay?”

“There’s…” his voice cracks, and she hears him clear it. “There’s an MCI.”
