Not metaphorically. The connection between my light and her shadow producing, at close proximity, a frequency I can hear — a high, sustained, vibrating pitch that exists at the boundary between sound and sensation and that carries the specific, devastating quality of two complementary powers recognizing each other and protesting the distance between them with the full force of a design that was built for contact rather than separation.

“Turn it down,” she says. Standing at the top of the stairs. Her jaw set. The gray eyes carrying the flat, hostile attention of a woman who has come for information and not for the bond’s screaming and who is already regretting the coming.

“I cannot turn it down. The bond responds to proximity. The response is not voluntary.”

“Then talk fast and I’ll leave fast and the proximity stays short.”

The hostility is earned. I am aware of this — the bond carrying the awareness alongside the need, the two sensations coexisting in my light with the contradictory quality that has defined every moment since the forest. I need her near. She is right to keep me far. The need and the rightness occupying the same body and the body unable to reconcile them.

“I need to understand your shadow’s capabilities,” I say. The institutional language providing the framework that keeps the conversation functional rather than personal. “The specialists will deploy equipment calibrated to the data my assessment provided. The data maps your shadow’s standard architecture — the depth, the fire pathways, the vampire properties, the defensive layers. What the data does not map is the living quality. The independence. The specific capabilities your shadow possesses that the standard architecture does not reveal.”

“You want me to show you what my shadows can do so you can tell me how the specialists will try to stop it.”

“Yes.”

“That requires trust. Trust requires a foundation. The foundation between us is a handprint on my throat.”

The words hit the way her words always hit — with the precise, devastating accuracy of a woman who does not circle the truth but walks directly into it and forces the person she is speaking to to stand in it with her. The handprint. The mark that my hand left on her skin. The foundation of the bond — violence, not choice. Force, not trust.

“The foundation is what it is,” I say. “The information is needed regardless of the foundation’s quality. The specialists arrive in forty-eight hours. Your shadow’s capabilities determine the defense’s architecture. The defense’s architecture determines whether you survive. I am asking you to show me your shadow not because you trust me but because the showing may keep you alive.”

She considers. The gray eyes measuring me with the specific, analytical attention that her living intelligence provides — the shadow reading me the way my light reads shadow, the complementary perception operating in reverse. She is seeing me the way I see her. The bond providing mutual access to the other’s essential nature. The access that makes hiding impossible between us and that makes the hostility honest because the hostility is based on complete information rather than assumption.

“Show me yours first,” she says.

The request stops me. The reciprocity — not a demand for vulnerability but an exchange of it. Show me your power and I’ll show you mine. The specific, street-level fairness of a woman who has been navigating power imbalances since September and who has learned that the navigation requires equality of exposure.

I open my light.

Not the reading beam. Not the institutional assessment that penetrates shadow and extracts confession. The resting state — the natural, unfiltered, undirected expression of my power in its raw form. The light expanding from my body into the tower’s dark interior with the warm, golden radiance that my institutional training keeps contained and that the containment has been making increasingly difficult since the bond formed.

The light fills the tower. The cold stone warming under the illumination. The damp air drying as the radiance passes through it. The darkness in the corners retreating — not destroyed but displaced, the shadow pulling back from the light with the standard, involuntary response that shadow shows in the presence of directed illumination.

Except her shadow.

Her shadow does not retreat. Her crimson-tipped darkness stands in my light and the light washes over it and the darkness remains. Not through resistance — through recognition. Her living shadow recognizing my light as complement rather than threat and responding to the recognition by staying rather than retreating. The shadow in the light. The darkness in the illumination. The two powers occupying the same space with the easy, natural, pre-Fall compatibility that the division made impossible and that her living intelligence makes possible again.

The sight of it makes something shift inside me. The sealed room — already damaged, already cracking — producing a sound I have not heard in nine centuries. Not breaking. Opening. The sound of a door that was locked from the inside being unlocked by a key that fits because the key was made for the lock and the lock was made for the key and the nine centuries of locking was the anomaly and the opening is the design.

I hate the opening. I hate the design. I hate the pre-Fall compatibility that makes her shadow stay in my light when every other shadow in nine centuries has retreated. I hate the bond that connects us and the thread that carries her presence and the compass that points toward her and the wanting that makes the hating feel like the desperate, flailing resistance of a man being pulled under by a current he cannot fight.

And I hate that the hating does not stop the wanting. That beneath the hatred and the guilt and the institutional training and the nine centuries of wall-building, my light wants her shadow with a hunger that the hating cannot diminish and that the wanting is older than the hating because the wanting is pre-Fall and the hating is post-Fall and the pre-Fall is the foundation and the post-Fall is the construction and the foundation will always outlast the building.

“Your turn,” I say. My voice carrying the rough, stripped quality that the opening produces when the opening happens in real time and the being experiencing the opening cannot disguise the opening’s cost.

Ashley extends her shadows.

Not the defensive compression. Not the false normal or the fire blend or any of the layered disguises her defenses produce. The full, uncompressed, crimson-bright expression of a living darkness that has been hiding since September and that is choosing, in this tower, to show itself to the being whose light it was hiding from.

The shadows fill the tower alongside my light. Crimson and gold occupying the same stone space. Her darkness and my illumination touching at every surface — the walls, the floor, the cold stone stairs, the arched window where the dusk sky carries the last amber light of a day that is ending while two enemies show each other what they are.

Her shadows speak to my light.

Not words. Not the confession my reading produces — the involuntary opening, the forced truth. A communication. The living intelligence extending tendrils of crimson darkness toward my illumination with the deliberate, voluntary, choosing quality that identifies her shadow as alive and that produces in my light a response I cannot control.

My light answers.

The illumination reaching toward her shadow-tendrils with the same voluntary, choosing, alive quality. The light and the shadow meeting in the space between our bodies and the meeting producing the specific, impossible, devastating quality that the pre-Fall texts describe and that the institution sealed because the quality proves the division wrong.
