“Okay,” I say. “Walk me through it.”
He does. The ritual requires three stages. First — he feeds from me, drawing enough blood to open the mate bond’s deepest channel. The connection that only activates during high-volume exchange. The level beneath the everyday bond that carries not just emotion and awareness but essence. Identity. The fundamental nature of the being on the other end, delivered through blood with a fidelity that makes words and touch seem like approximations of a language blood speaks fluently.
Second — I feed from him. His blood, ancient and dense and carrying the accumulated properties of millennia, enters my body and begins the merging. Not the surface rewrite of last semester’s overlay. A deep integration where his vampire nature fuses with my shadow at the root — the place where my power originates and where the crimson and the living quality and the Voice all connect to the core of what I am.
Third — the bond carries the merging through both of us simultaneously. His blood in my body meets my blood in his, and the mate bond translates the dual exchange into a shared experience that neither of us controls. The sensation — his ancient nature weaving into my young power — will be, in Bael’s words, significant.
“Ready?” he asks.
“You keep asking me that before things that are going to hurt.”
“This will not hurt. Pain requires resistance. The mate bond does not resist — it opens. What you will feel is not pain. It is depth.”
I step toward him. The grove is dark except for the crimson glow of my shadows and the faint silver of moonlight filtering through the dome. The night air carries the cold mineral smell of damp moss and old stone. His body in the shadow-light is sculpture — the pale skin, the defined muscle, the ancient stillness of a being who has not aged in millennia and whose body carries the devastating beauty of something made to last.
“Come here,” he says. Quiet. Not a command — an invitation spoken in the voice he reserves for the moments between us that are not about strategy or survival. The voice that belongs to the sanctuary and the moss of the grove and the darkest hours when the world shrinks to two bodies. The voice that makes my shadows reach for him before my body does.
I go to him.
His hands on my waist. Cool palms on warm skin — I’ve taken off my sweater, my shirt, standing in the grove air with goosebumps rising on my arms that have nothing to do with the cold and everything to do with the way his thumbs trace the curve of my ribcage. Slow. Deliberate. The precision of someone who has been mapping this body for months and still finds new things to notice every time.
“I’m going to feed first,” he says. His mouth at my ear. His breath cool against my neck, carrying the scent of him — old stone, cold water, the deep mineral smell of a being whose body is composed of substances older than the vocabulary used to describe them. “The feeding will open the deep channel. When it opens, you’ll feel the bond shift. Don’t fight it. Let it pull you in.”
“Bael.”
“Yes?”
“Stop explaining and bite me.”
The sound he makes — low, rough, the vibration of a vampire who has been told to stop holding back — travels through his chest into mine where we’re pressed together. My shadows respond by wrapping around both of us in a cocoon of crimson darkness that blocks out the grove and the dome and the forest and everything that isn’t the two bodies at the center of the living shadow.
He bites.
The fangs enter my throat at the claiming marks — the twin scars from the first time he fed from me. The places where his mouth has returned again and again until the skin there carries a permanent sensitivity that makes the initial penetration feel like a key turning in a lock built specifically for this. The pain is brief and bright and immediately overtaken by the pull — the deep, rhythmic draw of his mouth on my blood. The suction carrying my blood from my veins into his body with the ancient hunger of a being who has been feeding for millennia and who feeds from me with a tenderness and a greed that coexist without contradiction.
The mate bond catches fire.
Not gradually — instantaneously. The deep channel opens the way he described. A sudden expansion from the everyday depth to something that goes all the way down. I feel him. Not his emotions, not his location, not the surface awareness the regular bond provides. I feel him. The essential nature of the ancient being whose mouth is on my throat — the millennia of existence, the accumulated weight of centuries, the quality of a consciousness that has been alive so long that life itself has become a texture rather than a state.
The volume of blood he’s drawing is more than any previous feeding. I feel the loss — not as weakness but as opening. Each draw pulls more of me into the bond’s deep channel. More of my identity flowing toward him through the blood with the willing surrender that the mate bond translates into the most intimate act I’ve ever experienced. I am giving him myself. Not metaphorically. Through the blood, through the bond, the core of who I am — the crimson, the living shadow, the Voice, the stubborn twenty-year-old woman who has survived everything — flowing from my body into his with a fidelity that makes every other form of intimacy feel like a sketch compared to a painting.
He pulls back. Blood on his lips — my blood, bright red, carrying the crimson light that identifies it as Ascendant. His eyes are blown dark, the pupils dilated past the point where the green iris is visible. The feeding has affected him as deeply as it’s affected me — the deep channel working both ways, my essence pouring into his ancient body and creating a reaction I can feel through the bond as heat. Not temperature heat. Need.
“Now you,” he says. His voice wrecked. The ancient composure stripped to its foundation by the volume of Ascendant blood running through his body and the mate bond screaming with the depth of the channel the feeding ripped open.
He raises his wrist to my mouth. The skin pale, the veins beneath carrying the dark blood I tasted last semester — the nearly black ichor that holds millennia of accumulated power. He opens the vein with his own fang. A quick, precise puncture that produces a well of dark blood against white skin.
I drink.
His blood enters my body and the world disappears. Not unconsciousness — expansion. The ancient blood hitting my system with the force of a wave hitting a shore. Millennia of accumulated power entering the body of a twenty-year-old woman and meeting the crimson Ascendant power that lives there. The meeting producing a reaction that the mate bond carries through both of us like a detonation.
I feel the merging begin. His vampire nature — the ancient darkness, the deep shadow affinity, the quality of a being who has lived in shadow for so long that shadow has become inseparable from his identity — fusing with my own shadow at the root. Not layering on top. Weaving in. His nature threading through mine the way his blood is threading through my veins. The ancient and the young combining at the place where shadow originates into something that is neither purely vampire nor purely Ascendant but both.
The sensation is — Bael said it wouldn’t hurt. He was right. It doesn’t hurt. It feels like being filled. Like the empty spaces in my shadow — the places where the power has been growing and expanding and reaching for something it couldn’t find — are being filled by his ancient quality pouring into them and making the shadow complete in a way it has never been.
My shadows respond. The crimson darkness wrapping around both of us flares — not with the harbinger light but with something deeper. A pulse that carries through the living intelligence and rewrites the way the shadows interact with the world. Where they were crimson they are now crimson-dark — the harbinger color still present but layered beneath a depth of ancient shadow that reads, to any observer, as old. As vampire. As the natural product of a deep mate bond with an ancient being rather than the product of a power the system wants to destroy.
The second skin. Not a disguise. A truth. The vampire in my shadow is real now — as real as the crimson, as real as the living quality. Raziel’s light will find it and read it as genuine because it is genuine. The deepest form of Bael’s selective truth: make the disguise real.
