Winter sighed again. What to say?
“Don’t tell him who we really are?” Vicky told her.
“Tell him,” War chimed in. “It’s best he hears it from us.”
“That’s right,” Vicky agreed. “Don’t let him hear it from them. That’ll make it worse.”
Her beasts were right. She needed to be the one who told him. Winter prayed for strength before saying, “They’re the three goddesses of the apocalypse.”
“Like the four horsemen?” He asked.
Winter nodded. “Something like that. But the horsemen are on your plane. The goddesses are not from the mortal plane. They’re from somewhere scarier, deadlier. On their plane, the four horsemen are known as the four goddesses of the apocalypse.”
Rhen moved to the other window and peered behind the curtain. “That’s Jenn in that pale green robe.”
“That’s not her true form. The one you call Jenn, she’s the goddess of death. And there’s the goddess of pestilence and the goddess of famine.”
“Where’s the fourth one?” Rhen asked.
She’d known that question was coming. Now, she wished she would’ve told him sooner. It was too late for that. Winter released her curtain and turned to face them. “I’m the fourth one.”
Sin gasped. Rhen remained quiet. But the look in his eyes said it all. He looked angry. Very angry.
“What?” Sin asked.
“I’m the goddess of war,” Winter told them. A tear dripped down her cheek. Please don’t hate me, Rhen. “Together, my sisters and I, along with our council of wrath,” she took a deep breath. “We are also known as The Deciders.”
A look of disgust filtered into Rhen’s gaze. Winter’s heart felt like it had dropped to her feet.
“Impossible,” Rhen whispered. “Impossible,” he yelled. “My mate cannot be a fucking Decider.”
Winter wiped her eyes. “Now you see why I told you that us being together is impossible.” But I wanted it anyway. You made me believe in the impossible, Rhen Fujisaki.
“How is this possible?” Rhen shouted. “How are you one of them?”
“I’m not like them,” Winter pointed out. “That’s why I live here, alone, away from their evilness.” I’m not evil… anymore. I forgave you. Now it’s your time to forgive me. She wanted to say all those things. But her damn pride wouldn’t let her.
“You should’ve told me,” Rhen shouted, eyes glowing red.
He was truly angry with her. After what she’d forgiven him for, this should be a piece of cake.
“Why?” Winter shouted. “It’s not like we’re ever going to be together. My secrets are my own. Like yours are your own.”
“After all I’ve done for you, you…”
“You tried to kill me. Excuse me if I don’t give a fuck about all you’ve done for me.” Why did I say that?
“Hey, you tried to kill me too,” Rhen shouted.
“Did you die?”
“That’s beside the point. You’re the goddess of war, and you didn’t tell me.”
“We have more important things to worry about, vampire. My sisters want in. My wards will only hold them off for so long.”
“Sinclair can use her magic to help you strengthen them.”
That was true. Right now, she couldn’t focus on her anger. She had to focus on the problem at hand. She turned to Sinclair then gasped when he saw Kaede standing behind Sinclair with his hand covering up her mouth. And she’d thought their situation couldn’t get worse.
