“What else did he say, Aisling?”

The feelings I felt in the hallway when Trick was slaying me apart come back, getting stuck in my throat. It’s a possibility I don’t want to think about. I wouldn’t be able to live if my baby got taken away from me.

“He started off by saying that you only invited me today to have a relationship with Cormac and you didn’t actually want me. Which is fine by the way. I would never use him against you just because you didn’t want to be with me. I hope you know that.” I pause, trying to remember what else he said. He came at me so fast that I felt like my brain short-circuited. I’ve never had someone come at me like that before. It’s scaring me that Hash still hasn’t said a word or butted in. “Oh, and told me to count my days because the club has a good lawyer and Cormac wouldn’t be with me much longer. He was going to make sure of it,” I whisper, spilling my guts. I’m about to keep the tears out of my voice but not the fear. “Oh, and he called me a cunt.”

“What the fuck?” Hash hisses.

I bring my knees closer, hugging them to my chest as I search for comfort.

“You know it’s not true, right?” Hash asks, finally fully turning to look at me.

His eyes are full of rage.

“Which part?” I stupidly ask.

“Which part?” Hash asks in disbelief before losing it. “Fucking all of it! Jesus Christ, Aisling. Glad to know what you really think of me, babe. Better to know now than two years down the line.”

Hash throws the comforter off him and gets out of bed, pulling on his jeans, shirt, and cut.

“Where are you going?” I ask, my heart sinking.

My gut was telling me to lie, but my heart wasn’t in it. I should have listened to my gut, because in the end they always shoot the messenger.

“Got shit to do. I’ll catch you later.”

The tears I was keeping at bay spill over, trailing down my face. I feel like I’ve gone back in time to the night he left for good and cut me out of his life.

Except this time he’s not only walking out on me. He’s walking out on Cormac too.

“If you walk out that door again, this is done. You won’t be welcome back,” I tell him, finding my voice even though it comes out broken.

HASH

If you walk out that door again, this is done. You won’t be welcome back.

I stop with my hand on the doorknob, frozen in place.

I don’t want to fuck up even more than I already have, but all I want to do is punch Trick’s face in. Maybe it will numb the hurt I feel from Aisling thinking I would do any of the shit Trick spewed at her.

My chest is rising and falling as I try to check myself.

I hear the sheets rustle behind me before feet lightly pad across the floor, headed right toward me. Aisling’s arms wrap around my waist, and she hugs me from behind, her cheek pressing up against my back.

“Please don’t go,” she whispers.

Her plea guts me. My head hangs as my hand releases the doorknob and rests on hers, pressing both of our palms into my stomach.

“I’m not going anywhere, baby doll,” I whisper back.

I feel her sigh of relief against my back before her hands leave my waist. “Let’s go back to bed.”

I turn around, watching her slowly walk around the bed to her side and slide in. She props her head up on an elbow, waiting for me.

Without a word, I slide in on my side, matching her position. “I’m sorry.”
