Judy immediately opened her notebook.
“About Emily?”
“The night she disappeared.”
“What?”
“She gave me something.”
Trigger moved closer.
“What did she give you?”
“A key.”
Judy’s pen stopped.
“What kind of key?”
“I don’t know. It was small. Brass. She pushed it into my hand at the bonfire and told me to keep it.”
“Did she say what it opened?”
“No.”
“What did you do with it?”
Rylie closed her eyes.
“I put it in the pocket of my camp sweatshirt.”
“Where is the sweatshirt now?”
“My father’s house. He kept boxes of my things after I moved away.”
Sheriff Tate stood near the staircase.
“I know which box.”
Judy closed her notebook.
“We retrieve it in daylight.”
Rylie looked toward her father.
“What if the key is still there?”
“Then we find out what Emily wanted you to open,” Judy said.
“And if it isn’t?”
Judy looked at the photograph of Rylie sleeping.
“Then someone found it before we did.”
Max rose and his hair stood straight up.
A vehicle drove down Main Street.
