Static.

Then gunfire erupted through the tunnel.

Not behind us.

Ahead.

Near the eastern exit.

Mace hauled Robert upright.

“Wolf, Robert is in custody. Evan is at the east exit.”

Trigger’s voice exploded through the radio.

“He has Rylie!”

Every part of me went cold.

Robert began laughing again.

“My brother always finishes his list.”

I looked directly into his eyes.

“Not tonight.”

Mace secured Robert to a steel maintenance ladder while Elizabeth remained behind the support with Max.

I knelt beside her.

“Spokane officers are coming into the tunnel.”

“You’re leaving?”

“Rylie needs us.”

Fear flickered across her face.

“Evan will kill her.”

“No.”

The word came out with more certainty than I felt.

“He has spent eighteen years killing women who remembered you.”

Elizabeth’s lips trembled.

“They died because of me.”

“They died because Evan Mills chose to murder them.”

I took her hand.

“None of this belongs to you.”

Another gunshot echoed in the distance.
