I haven't seen Claire smile since Nathan's funeral.
The realization hits harder than it should.
“Where did you go?”
“Nowhere at first.”
“What does that mean?”
“I drove.”
“For how long?”
“About an hour. Then I stopped at a gas station.”
“Used a credit card?”
“No.”
“Debit?”
“No.”
“How'd you pay?”
“Cash.”
“Why?”
She looks at me like I'm an idiot.
“Because my husband spent eleven years telling me not to leave an electronic trail if I ever had to run.”
Wolf mutters something that sounds suspiciously like, “I liked this guy.”
I glance at him.
“You would've.”
Claire continues.
“I bought a prepaid phone.”
“Cash?”
“Yes.”
“Call anyone?”
“No.”
“Turn your regular phone off before leaving?”
“I told you. I left it at the house.”
“Smart.”
She points at me.
