“That's three.”
Despite everything, my mouth twitches.
Claire sees it.
For half a second, something familiar passes between us.
Then it's gone.
“What about Sophie's tablet?” Ace asks.
Claire freezes.
I turn toward her.
“She has a tablet?”
“At home.”
“You didn't bring it?”
“No.”
“Watch?”
“No.”
“Anything electronic in her backpack?”
“No.”
“Vehicle GPS?”
“The truck is twenty-two years old.”
Perfect.
Nathan gave her an escape vehicle nobody could track remotely.
That wasn't an accident.
“What did you do after the gas station?”
“I started driving south.”
“Straight here?”
“Eventually.”
“What does that mean?”
“I didn't know if anyone was following me. So I changed highways several times. I stopped outside Amarillo yesterday afternoon and slept for a couple of hours in the truck with Sophie.”
Two nights.
She's been running for two nights.
And somehow she's still upright.
