“Thank you, Aunty. Now, answer the other six, Jay.”

I gave them the whole tour play-by-play, leaving the hug that Baby Jay gave Ms. Jai for the end.

“Wait, what Baby Jay?” my mother questioned. “I know you ain’t talkin’ ‘bout my grandson.”

“Yeah,” Key added, “not Mr.GimmeFiftyFeet.”

I laughed. “I’m talkin’ ‘bout the only Baby Jay we know. He hugged that woman and blew my mind.”

“Wowww,” they let out in unison before giggling.

“I like her already,” my mother concluded.

“That says a lot, Jay,” Key concluded. “I might like her too. Heavy on the might. Ion know how I feel about him giving my hugs out.”

“Girl, quit.” My mother laughed. “Did you like her, Jamison?”

“Like her how?” I looked back and forth between her and the phone.

She laughed harder.

“He smiling, Aunty?” Key asked, and my mother nodded.

I made my lips form a straight line. “No, I’m not. I’m asking y’all how I’m spose to like her? I only met the lady once. I ain’t looking for a date. I’m looking for a teacher for my son.”

“Ooouu, yeah, Aunty. That teacher must be real cute.” Key snickered.

“I’m talkin’ fine, Key.”

“Mannn, go ‘head wit’ that. Bye, Key.” I went to hang up, and she stopped me.

“Wait, so are you enrolling him? When he start? What ti…”

I ended the call, and my mother cracked up.

“Y’all bogus.” I shook my head but couldn’t help the smile that hung on my lips.

“And you’re obvious.”

“I’m all done!” Baby Jay announced.

“Boy, you was hungry, huh?”

He nodded, and I got up to clean up after him.

“I’ma pour him some milk.”

“If it ain’t oat milk, he can’t have it, Ma.”
