I return my attention to the emails, zoning in on work. Ice pings that they are on their way up.
I call Grayson into my office.
“No one comes in here, and that includes you. If she needs anything, you notify me,” I quietly say to him.
“Yes, boss.”
“Ice and the others are on their way up. We are meeting in the secured conference room. Only ping me if she needs something or in an emergency.”
“Got it, boss.” He leaves and I go to her.
“Lexi, I’m going into a meeting. All communication is locked out. The only person that can reach me is Grayson. If you need anything, please let him know. You are safe here and I won’t be gone long. There are water and drinks over there and Grayson can get you anything you may need.”
“How long?” she asks, fear and uncertainty spreading across her face.
“About an hour.”
“Will Ice be here with me?” her voice drops.
“No, Ice will be with me,” I state and notice the immediate apprehension in her eyes. “I’m just a few doors down,” I assure.
“How many doors?” she asks.
I mentally count.
“Four doors.”
“Okay,” she sighs. “I’ll just be here, puzzling,” she says as a sly smile tugs the corner of her lips. Almost a second smile today. It would seem knowing how close I am is appeasing to her. “See you soon,” she says, turning back to the puzzle. I nod and leave the room.
At Grayson’s desk, I pause for a moment. “If she needs anything, and I mean anything, come and get me.”
“Got it, boss”
I shut my phone off as I enter the secured conference room. All electronic devices are shut off once we step in here, only the encrypted laptop is allowed.
“Let’s get started,” I say to the men already seated in their usual spots.
Malik shares his screen. “Most of the information has been deleted, but Mr. Lloyd gave us the last five days before the attack. We were able to get additional information from other cameras around.”
He hits play and video comes up. “Notice Ms. Doherty and Amrit as they walk. The woman pushing the stroller seems to be focused on them, and based on the data, she only goes on a stroll when they are out.”
Lexi looks relaxed and happy, but Amrit is vigilant.
“One camera we accessed showed the stroller woman sharing information with this man who’s unknown.”
He clicks again. “On the day of the attack, they killed all comms. There were four of them. Amrit killed all four men but bled out because he couldn’t call for help. Ms. Doherty was able to escape. The unknown man returned the next day and stayed in the crowd. He wasn’t one of the attackers.
I’m still trying to find out who he is and who he reports to. Mr. Lloyd has no idea who he is either. It would seem someone is paying him. Mr. Lloyd did say he received another threatening message after the unit in Chicago was attacked. He also said the attack helped him narrow down to the four people who knew of the unit.”
“Who are the four?” I ask.
“Mr. Lloyd, his half-brother, his PA, and Mr. Clarke from the other agency.”
My eyes flare; Clarke is our competition and the guy has no conscience. It’s all money for him. If Jonah had reached out to him before coming to me, it’s possible he would know who wants Lexi dead.
“Dig into all three, except Jonah.”
“They were the same two who knew her location in London, and Clarke might know now about her being here.” My jaw tightens.
