“Maybe.” I rub the back of my neck. “But maybe you caught him by surprise, so he was too busy thinking what to do about you and it was dark, so he didn’t see the blood.”
After clicking on the image results, I scroll through the photos. Most of them come from conferences and some charity dinner, but there’s also one of him teaching with his sleeves rolled up, probably from the college website, and I bet some girls in his classes have a crush on him. He’s younger than most professors here and good-looking.
As I open the image, something nags at the back of my mind. Elsie called me once, giggling so hard she could barely get the words out, and went on and on about a professor who was so hot that she couldn’t focus in his class. She swore she’d hook up with him in a heartbeat if he ever gave her the chance, and I laughed and said she should go for it.
After that, her texts and calls got shorter and sparser, until most of them were just emojis or one word, and I figured college was eating up all her time. Maybe it wasn’t just college, though. My fingers go still on the touchpad.
“What’s wrong?” Veronica asks.
“Elsie told me about a professor once.” I swallow hard. “Some hot professor she wanted to hook up with.”
Veronica’s eyes widen. “Him?”
“I don’t know. She never said his name or which class it was.” I grind my teeth. “But right after that, she stopped calling me as much. And I never even asked her why because I figured she was just busy.”
Veronica looks back at the photo and presses her lips together. Maybe Camden was the reason Elsie didn’t have time for me. She could’ve just found new friends and gotten busy, which happens to everyone in college, but Camden could really be the professor she was talking about, since most professors are older.
There are way too many coincidences for my liking. I can’t believe I never thought about it before, but since Elsie mentioned it only once, I didn’t think anything could’ve ever happened. It was never a possibility I actually considered when trying to find out what happened to her.
Setting the laptop on the bed, I get to my feet. “I’m going to his office.”
“What?” Veronica catches my arm. “No!”
“Now that I know something might’ve happened between them, he could tell me if Elsie—”
“Maybe, but you can’t just barge in there.” Her fingers tighten around my arm. “Everyone thinks we left, remember? If he turns out not to be Supreme, someone’s bound to see you on your way to his office or he’ll tell someone, and then the real Supreme will know we’re back and go into hiding or whatever.”
“I don’t give a fuck.”
“Well, I do.” She glares at me. “And what would you even say to him? Hey, are you Supreme and did you do something to my friend Elsie? He’d just lie, and then he’d call his guys as soon as you left.”
Running my hand over my face, I let out a heavy breath. I want to argue with her, but I don’t have anything smart to say, because she’s right, and I’d look like an idiot accusing a professor of something without any proof.
“So what can we do?” I ask, sitting back down on the bed.
“We check when he has class.” Veronica takes the laptop. “While he’s teaching, he can’t run around doing society stuff, and we’ll know exactly where he is the whole time, so we can investigate.”
She clicks through the college website until she finds the course schedule, and his name shows up in a few places, with times and rooms listed next to each one. As I peer at the screen, she tilts the laptop toward me. Then she takes a photo of the schedule with her phone.
“Okay,” she says. “At least now we know when he’s busy.”
Another idea comes to my mind. “And when he’s busy, he’s not home.”
“Um, yeah?”
“We can break into his house.” I grin.
Her head whips toward me. “Are you crazy? I thought we would just—”
“Maybe a little, but think about it.”
“Come on, if he’s really Supreme, there’s no way he’d leave his house unprotected. He probably has cameras and alarms all over the place, and who knows? Maybe he even has a guard dog, or just guards.”
“Probably, yeah, but we can check.” I shrug. “If he has any proof about being the society’s leader or Elsie, it won’t be in his office. He’s not dumb enough to hide that stuff on campus, where someone random could find it.”
She bites down on her lip, her gaze on the schedule, then she sighs. “Fine, but we’re not doing anything until we have a good plan.”
“Deal.” All I want is to find out if Camden has anything to do with Elsie’s death, because if he does...
