And because … it was the full moon.

“Ember,” I called, knowing that if I walked up the stairs, I probably wouldn’t be able to come back down without marking her.

My wolf might’ve gotten his mate back, but that bond had been fractured when she originally died.

My wolf would respond like any wolf would to a she-wolf in heat.

“Ember,” I said again, this time louder.

Silence.

“Can we talk?” I asked.

Silence.

“Please,” I said, desperate for her to come downstairs.

Silence.

She was so quiet that if I didn’t know any better, I’d think that she wasn’t here. But the heat was getting stronger, and my will to stay down here was … weaker. I swallowed hard, blinking a few times to stay in control.

I needed to mark her.

I fucking needed to.

It would be her only chance at surviving for a bit longer.

It would give her life … better odds.

It would be selfish, selfless … I didn’t know anymore. I needed her. I wanted her. I didn’t care what my wolf said. I didn’t care what he was responding to anymore. I was desperate to be hers, and I’d do whatever it took to make up for my wrongdoings.

For reacting the way I had with Lilliana.

For not questioning it more.

For not celebrating Ember’s birthday the way I should’ve.

The banana-bread cake still sat on the counter, untouched besides Ember’s finger dippings. The present I had given her was on the counter, still wrapped but with Ember’s tears all over it.

There was only one thing that would make this right.

One fucking way.

I’d have to put aside my pride, my ego.

I’d have to do the one thing I never wanted to do again.

But I’d do it for Ember. I would do anything for Ember.

Chapter Seventy-Five

Davix

“I don’t give a fuck where his scent leads,” I growled at Silas. “Find him now.”

“Is it really that serious?” Silas asked. “Your sister—”

I snatched his throat and slammed him up against the packhouse so Hazel couldn’t see what I was about to do to this fucker if he said one more word to me. I didn’t have it in me to keep quiet or calm about this anymore.
