Their Wicked Cage

The look he gives me could melt my dress clean off.

There then gone, so slight that only someone familiar with him could catch it.

And Arkyn does.

His brow furrows, his gaze snapping between us—then it’s Riven who’s dragging his sword catcher out of the room.

Chapter 20

GWYN

Lettie pretends to take me to a suite that is most definitely not mine, sandwiched between the outspoken siren—Lyrielle—and a quiet nymph—Daphne.

The nymph waves at me as we part ways, her smile radiant against skin that embodies the golden warmth of autumn.

Once the bedroom door locks behind us, Lettie guides me through the staff corridors back to my suite on the opposite side of the palace.

Far, far away from the brides.

The moment we step through the tapestry and into the quiet of my suite, I sigh in relief.

“Sweet, sweet silence,” I sing, flopping onto my bed.

Achlys pounces on me, now a sleek, black cat, and kneads my stomach like it’s dough.

“Three weeks,” I mutter, petting him and staring at the ceiling.

“It’s not that much time to truly get to know someone,” Lettie says.

“I know!” I sit up, scooping Achlys into my arms and cradling him. Annoyed, he wiggles out of my grasp and jumps from the bed, winding around Lettie’s ankles before padding through the open doors and onto the terrace to stretch out across the warm stone. “Though I suppose with Riven’s proposed schedule, it’d be like condensing a couple months’ worth of courting into three full weeks.”

She pours a glass of water and sets it on the table next to my lunch. “And he has you sussing out his candidates for him too.”

“That’s true.” I pull my knees to my chest. “But what if I choose wrong? What if the bride I suggest is actually horrible for the Fae Isles?”

Or for him?

“Ultimately, it’s his decision, milady.” She smiles. “You’re just… counseling him.”

A single sharp knock on the door has Lettie rushing to open it.

Riven blows past her, hands flexing and unflexing at his sides.

His eyes burn as they land on me.

“You’re dismissed, Lettie,” he says without looking at her.

Arkyn’s covert whispering from earlier has concern barreling through me.

Has something happened?

Are the wards—

“Gwyn and I are not to be bothered as we discuss the brides.”

Oh.

Never mind, then.
