Fury

Not letting her take even a small win, the team started slashing. Blades flying.

Tisiphone screamed. She kicked.

Wings flapping, she scanned the room. She dive-bombed for the sword over the mantel.

Eryn sprinted toward her. She leaped into the air, and onto the fury’s back.

“Catch,” Adair called out.

Eryn held onto the wild fury with one arm around her neck and caught Adair’s knife.

In a practiced move, Eryn flipped it in her hand and drove the blade into Tisiphone’s neck.

Weak, bleeding, the fury crashed to the ground.

She struggled to stand, straining in Eryn’s grasp.

Vann sneered as he mustered his strength.

He rotated his sword as he stalked toward her.

Ryan took the other side, his demonic blade pointed at her heart. Certain death, even for an immortal. He smiled with delighted malice. “Yeah. You know what this is. Don’t fucking move.”

Tisiphone opened her mouth to scream.

One good slice with that blade, a stab in the heart, and Tisiphone wouldn’t have time to beg for death.

The hunter in Vann demanded satisfaction. Blood. A demon one thrust away from death. The others craved it, too.

Eryn gripped one hand on the fury’s shirt and pinned her back. She puffed a sharp breath, and flattened her palm over Tisiphone’s cheek. Blood smeared onto her pristine skin.

Tisiphone lurched back. One hand over her bleeding middle. Blood poured from the wound in her neck. One stumble from collapsing.

Too weak, too injured to fight back, Tisiphone hissed, sickly sweet, “You’ll die if you kill me.”

Eryn’s lips peeled back. She tipped up her chin as she held the fury in a piercing gaze. “To be death, you must feel it. You must know it. You might even beg for it.” Eryn encased Tisiphone’s face in her hands. “Embrace it.”

Vann hissed and crossed to give Eryn what little strength he had. “What’s wrong?”

Eryn snarled through gritted teeth. Her skin was cold as ice even as she sweated from exertion. “She… I don’t know. She’s tangled our damn souls. It’s like trying to dig invisible stitches out of a healed wound. With gloves two sizes too big.”

Saliva and blood mixed in a slurred sputter as Tisiphone spoke. “Let me go, and I’ll give it back. You’ll never see me again.”

“The others. Let them go,” Eryn roared through gritted teeth.

The others?

Tisiphone’s eyes hollowed. Blue veins popped as she strained against the onslaught.

Trembling, holding firm, Eryn didn’t relent.

Vann stood behind her as she took on the frigid pain. Hand on her back, warming her chilled skin. “Who?” he asked softly.

Eryn held on, her voice cracking as a sob erupted from her chest. “I can feel them. All of them. Everyone she’s killed. Each of their souls. There’s nowhere else for them to go.”

His heart shattered as he realized what she was saying. “Your parents?”

A sob shuddered over her.
