My Soul to Keep

I squirmed, surprised that I didn’t have friction burns on my dick from jerking off so much. And despite practically draining myself dry, the bastard twitched again beneath the pile of blankets.

I was so hard it was nearly painful. Dropping a hand to my lap, I applied just enough pressure for it to feel good…

And my door flung open again. I yanked my hand away from my crotch but Carter was none the wiser. He rolled his eyes. “Dude, that’s what showers are for. Up! Let’s go! If you’re ready in ten, I’ll buy you a linen mocha as a treat.”

The door slammed shut again.

Damn older brothers.

Scrubbing a hand over my face, I pulled myself to my feet, gathered clean clothes, and threw myself into the quickest—cold—shower of my life… where I most definitely didn’t jerk off again…

Not until I got out, anyway.

A warm washcloth was sufficient enough to clean up my hands and stomach before I forced myself to get dressed.

I didn’t really know what a linen mocha was, but Carter made good on his promise to buy me one, chatting easily with the mummy behind the counter—Seth, I learned after a few minutes of hovering awkwardly near my roommate.

Damn, was everyone in this school attractive?

Seth was the epitome of tall, dark, and handsome, all manners and all muscle. He flashed me a heart-stopping grin, and I tried to convince the foolish organ that he smiled at everyone like that. He asked me the same question that everyone else had. “How are you settling in?”

My answer wasn’t much different than the one I thought about giving Carter on move-in day. I hadn’t been jump-scared by any more gargoyles, or antagonized by spiderlings. I’d even adjusted to having a house cat for a roommate—sort of.

He just had to be a black cat, didn’t he? Lurking in every corner, waiting to scare me.

But now I had that demon to worry about, monopolizing every inch of my mind and every millisecond of my free time.

“Getting there,” I told him, accepting the drink he handed me.

“If that’s too sweet for you, try the double alabaster espresso instead.”

“We’ll pass on that,” Carter answered for me. “He’s jumpy enough.”

I proved his point by flinching when he clapped me on my shoulder.

Carter and I left Mummy Mocha, and parted ways at the entrance to the library. While our schedules were similar, our classes were vastly different. While he was rounding out his time at CU with higher level specialized classes, I was prepping for things like Intro to Monsterkind and Monster Anatomy 101.

I hadn’t realized that the bodies around me differed so much from humans that it required a whole separate class.

And in some strange twist of fate—or perhaps not a twist at all—the demon was in that class.

Seeing a senior monster in an intro level class jarred me to the point where another student asked me what was wrong. Apparently, since he was a transfer, he had to take the mandatory intro classes alongside us.

A week in, it was time to choose lab partners and I was frozen silent when he slipped into the seat next to me. His body heat seemed to radiate right through both layers of our clothes and into my skin. Condensation beaded up on the side of my plastic cup and dripped down the sides.

“Might want to drink that before it becomes mocha water,” he chided, nudging the coffee closer to me.

I grabbed the cup, unsure of what it was about this guy that twisted me up so bad. The liquid inside was sickly sweet, almost too much so, but I didn’t want to upset Carter by not drinking it. I made a mental note to try the espresso thing next time, and tried to stomach as much of the drink as I could.

It took me longer than I cared to admit to realize that the demon was speaking to me. He watched me, expectantly, waiting on my reaction.

He didn’t seem annoyed, necessarily—more like he expected my scatterbrained nature.

“I’m sorry,” I murmured. “What was that?”

He laughed, the sound warming me from the inside out and raising goosebumps over my entire body.

The fuck kind of reaction was that?
