“Okay.” She blows her nose again, then gets up and leaves the living room. I take her used tissues to the kitchen, toss them in the trash, wash my hands, and lean back against the counter as I process the fact that my best friend and brother are going to have a baby.

Holy shit.

Chapter 15:

Stupid

Genevieve

Walking up to Wyatt’s house carrying a bone that weighs ten pounds, if not more, I watch the front door open, then Storm rushes down the steps toward me.

“Do you see what I brought you for being so good?” I ask him, and he barks loud, making me laugh, then runs around me in a circle, almost making me trip.

“Where is your car?” Wyatt comes down the steps to meet me and takes the bone Storm is desperate to get at before dropping a swift kiss to my lips.

“Home. I decided to walk.” I roll my eyes when he gives me a disapproving look. “Don’t frown at me. Your house is like a block from mine.”

“It’s cold.”

“That’s why I dressed appropriately.” I enter his house before him, take off my gloves, hat, and coat, and put everything on the back of his couch. “It smells good.”

“It’s the roast I put in the Crock-Pot a few hours ago.”

“You’re cooking?”

“Why are you surprised?”

“I don’t know. You’re a guy, and I thought when you said we had dinner plans that we’d be ordering something.”

“I’ve been on my own for a lot of years, babe, and I might eat takeout from time to time, but I really try to put real food in my body for the most part.”

“Well, it smells good, and I’m starving; I haven’t had a chance to eat today.”

“Why not?” The frown comes back, and I’m half tempted to try and smooth it out with my thumb.

“I went with Anna to an appointment this afternoon.”

“Appointment?”

“She’s pregnant.” I whisper like there is someone around who might hear the secret I’m supposed to keep to myself for now.

“Is that good or bad?”

“Good. I mean she is scared, and Kolter doesn’t know yet because she literally just found out this morning, but I think it’s going to be good once she tells him and he reassures her that he’s not mad.”

“He won’t be mad,” he tells me, and I feel my face go soft.

“That’s what I said, but until he tells her the same thing, she’s going to be freaking out.”

“When is she telling him?” he asks while he urges me in the direction of the kitchen. Storm, who hasn’t taken his attention off the bone he’s holding, follows right at his side.

“This evening, when he gets home from work.” I take the bone from him, scan his counters, and find a knife block next to the sink. After using the scissors to cut open the plastic, I look at it, then Storm. There is no way he’ll be able to carry the thing in his mouth. “Where do you want him to eat this thing?”

“Where did you even find that?”

“The feed store.” I smile proudly. “And this wasn’t even the biggest one they had.”

Shaking his head, he comes over and takes the bone from me and carries it to the back door. When he opens it up, Storm runs out ahead of him, and Wyatt places the bone on the small concrete patio right outside the door.
