Dex: If I get sick you owe me. Big time.

Another vibration.

Lexy: Oh wow Jude, I didn't know that. Of course I will.

I look up from my phone and find Dex still staring doubtfully at the bowl, but Lexy isn't looking at the food anymore.

She's looking at me.

Her head cocks slightly, blue eyes narrowing as she studies my face. I see the exact moment something clicks because her gaze flicks to Nora, then back to me.

“Oh. God.”

Fuck.

I stare at her and slowly shake my head.

Don't.

Her mouth parts, but another look from me stops whatever she's about to say.

Don't you fucking dare.

Nora keeps talking about what we're doing today, completely oblivious to the silent conversation happening behind her while she pours boiling milk into the egg mixture.

When I look at Lexy again, the surprise is gone. Something softer has taken its place, and I don't fucking like the sadness in her eyes when they meet mine.

Yeah.

I know.

Fucking sucks to be me, huh?

We all sit down around the tiny kitchen table while Chiara starts talking about restaurants we should try while we're here.

I look down at the mug in front of me, then at Nora.

She's not listening to her sister anymore. Her attention is completely on me, those dark eyes watching as she waits for me to taste it like a kid on Christmas morning waiting to open a present.

Fuck, she's cute.

I smile, bring the mug to my lips and take a sip.

Oh wow.

I lower it and stare inside, just to make sure this is actually the egg thing I'm drinking.

Yep.

Egg yolks, sugar and hot milk, and it tastes fucking amazing. Soft and sweet, creamy and warm, almost like drinking some kind of custard.

“You like it?” Nora asks eagerly.

I look up and her eyes are still fixed on me.

“Tastes sublime.”

And I don't even have to lie. It does.
