My Roommate Is Trying To Kill Me

Then he left.
Hakeem stood alone in the kitchen with his coffee and a fresh sense of personal humiliation. After a full ten seconds, he put down the mug, pulled out his phone, and reopened the list.
He added, with grim precision:
6. asked what nights I close / when I get home
— explanation provided: noise / locks / “house rhythm”
— still not loving the sequencing
7. asked whether I opened bedroom window
— explanation provided: airflow / jammed frame
— possible
— also possible he likes to know my vulnerabilities!!!
He looked at the exclamation points, frowned, and deleted two of the three.
8. told me not to lock my bedroom door
— explanation: latch catches, can get stuck
— horrifying sentence regardless of intent
Then, after a second’s thought:
9. aware enough to notice I seem suspicious???
— dangerous because smart
— or because I am being obvious
— worse somehow
He read back through the list.
What should have been comedic now had a little shape to it. It wasn’t enough to serve as proof of anything, even if he left the list with Layla and a note that said, “avenge me!” This paranoia wouldn’t survive daylight in another person’s mouth. But it was structure… a frame. Something he could return to instead of letting every new detail float loose and poison their burgeoning dynamic.
He changed the title.
Antonio: Ongoing Concerns
That looked professional and objective. Like notes a detective would take if the detective also had very nice eyelashes and no institutional support. It wasn’t proof, but it was process, and process felt a lot better than panic. If Antonio was weird in a harmless way, fine. If he wasn’t, Hakeem intended to notice early.
The day moved strangely after that. It was too ordinary to justify his nerves, too charged to settle. He cleaned part of his room because cleaning made him feel briefly superior to chaos. He texted Layla a screenshot of the list title only, not the bullet points, and she responded almost immediately:
LAYLA:
this is either the start of your murder or your crush. unsure which. invested anyway <3
He did not answer.
That night, after another shift and another drive home through Los Angeles lit up in strips and patches like a city continually auditioning for itself, he got into bed earlier than usual.
He left the lamp off.
